New Motherboard Issue

#1 Post by chiliagon »

Hello,

My mobo recently died and I replaced it. I have a primary hdd (2TB Hitachi) running my OS, windows 10 (upgraded from 8.1 in September) and a secondary drive (1TB WD Black) that contains family videos.

Following the move the primary drive is operational but the secondary data drive became inaccessible. It was showing as RAW in virtual disk manager which led me to you.

Initial Testdisk runs showed the disk as RAW. I got to "Analyze" and I waited over a day and stopped the function. I began again and now the drive is showing as NFTS. What to do now?

Below is the latest log

UPDATE

In Windows I get a "Drive not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Error.

I am able to see all the files in testdisk. I am presently copying the files to another drive. Will advise. Any insight in the meantime is appreciated.

Best,

C

Can you copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log?
You'll find it within your testdisk folder.
I assume that your file system is damaged.
After copying files, you can consider to run chkdsk driveletter: /r (it already implies /f) to have a try to repair your file system.
When you have any read errors, please let me know!

The italicized text above in the original post is the most current version of the testdisk log.

The disk contained about 900GB of files, how long to you expect the copy action to take?

Best,

Copying should take only few hours.
I assume at a max 3-4 hours?
A damaged file system can slow down scan speed.
Copying large files is faster than a huge amount of small files.

The copy took almost a week, but it is done. What is the best course to diagnose and repair the drive?

Ran CHKDSK and drive is operational now. There were several bad sectors.Took 8 days to get through the drive but scan completed and drive now shows in explorer.

Ran Crystaldiskinfo. Drive in question shows "caution". Report below. Any advice on a 4 year old drive (other than replace it!)?

You can run the diagnose utility from your disk manufacturer and have a try to low level format your disk.
Data should be recovered and you should have a backup too.
It's not a real low level format but all sectors will be overriden by zeros.
Afterwards you can check your disk again!
So it might be possible that the status of your disk appears as OK again?
If not:
In case a scan with hdtune free and an error scan can help too.
If you see any red blocks, disk should be replaced.
Caution always mean that you should keep an eye on your disk.
You can use the windows eventviewer and under system look for entries like disk.
Most important will be always backup!
It's a kind of sitting on a fence and is your disk still reliable or not?
