Unable to mount NTFS external hard drive in Ubuntu or Windows

#1 Post by caifaz »

Hello Team, I'm really trying to fix my external Toshiba 2TB hard drive (which has around 2 months and family pictures :'()

My best guess is that my son turned off my tv while it was recording live tv to that disk and then it stopped working.

Here is Ubuntu message

Code: Select all

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/ubuntu-mate/1959a9e4-f8bb-41b1-b531-fd2ccd7b818a: Command-line `mount -t "jfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/ubuntu-mate/1959a9e4-f8bb-41b1-b531-fd2ccd7b818a"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.
I'm really new with TestDisk (6.14), could you guide me through the process? I will reply any questions you have regarding my case.

Thanks in advance

The mount command shows jfs, not NTFS.
Please use TestDisk 7.1-WIP, select the external disk, Advanced, select the partition, List. Please copy/paste the testdisk.log file

Hello cgrenier, I have tried your suggestion but log is empty.

Testdisk 7.1 WIP

Open testdisk - Create - select the usb drive which size is detected properly - Select INTEL - Advanced - 2 partitions are listed.

Code: Select all

Partition Start End Size in sectors
> 1 P Sys=A2 0 1 1 243193 254 63 3906911547
  2 P Sys=A2 243194 0 1 243199 254 63 96390
Anything I'm missing? log displays the following and nothing else:

Code: Select all

Fri May 6 18:05:28 2016
Command line: TestDisk
Thanks

Please try TestDisk, Analyse, Quick Search, Stop, Deeper Search. If your NTFS partition is listed, set it as P(rimary), on next screen, choose Write, confirm, BackupBS, confirm, Quit and restart your computer.
If it doesn't work, try PhotoRec and tell me if it recovers some of your files.

Hello, thanks for your help, and sorry for the delay, I wasn't able to retrieve the partition BUT I did managed to retrieve most of the files with PhotoRec, thank again, keep up the hardwork.
