Mac: Photorec, I fail already wwith the first step, help please

#1 Post by perpendicular »

I downloaded testdisk-7.0.mac_intel.bz2 (under Mac OS X 10.9)

I double clicked the *bz2 file and it was unpacked and I got a folder "testdisk-7.0" with a lot of crap in it. I copied the folder to my applications folder.

Then I took this guide http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec ... _selection
I opened Terminal and typed "testdisk-7.0/photorec" (similar to the guides "testdisk-6.13/photorec" and hit enter.

No such file or directory!

The guide said: if one is not already in sudo testdisk will restart in sudo and ask for a password.

Can someone guide me through as if I was an idiot?

I have an empty reformatted 2TB drive, which I want to recover the files from (that got lost of cause). The destination will be a 3TB drive that has already data on it, I hope this is no problem.

I got through on my own.

Now I need to select the destination Drive. I want my external 3TB drive, but it seems Photorec is only showing me the internal 500GB (it did show me all, when I had to select the Drive to be scanned: 500GB Macintosh HD, 2TB external that must be scanned, 3TB external that should be destination).

I get this:

Code: Select all

PhotoRec 7.0, Data Recovery Utility, April 2015

Please select a destination to save the recovered files.
Do not choose to write the files to the same partition they were stored on.
Keys: Arrow keys to select another directory
C when the destination is correct
  Q to quit
Directory /Users/meinname

I solved my question.

I'd like to not though, that I got a MAc GUI notice that there was not enough buffer or something, and that photorec will be slower or something like that, allthough I have 16GB RAM.

Also it told me after the first pass that my 3TB HDD with 2,16TB free space was not having enogh free space to recover my 1,2TB from my 2TB drive that I wanted to scan. I created a subfolder on the 3TB drive and selected that and let pass2 run. I hope everything will be fine.

After pass 1 nothing was written to the disk, but since pass2 is running, I see that folders with the name recup_dir and a number are created.

PLEASE: of I may, could you update the step-by-step guide? Because the new vers 7.0 is different from vers 6.13 in the guide. The order in which options/decisions ti be taken are coming is different and some "button"/options do not exist.

pass2 is ready.

But bruteforce is now running and constantly looping where it says "test x". x is always jumping back to 0.

Code: Select all

Disk /dev/rdisk2 - 2000 GB / 1863 GiB (RO)
Partition Start End Size in sectors
10 P HFS 263968 0 1 3907029151 0 1 3906765184

Bruteforce 3871513688 sectors remaining (test 1893), 35341 files found
Elapsed time 16h48m44s
dv: 29095 recovered
apple: 3490 recovered
tx?: 1124 recovered
gif: 462 recovered
png: 352 recovered
exe: 278 recovered
txt: 257 recovered
mov: 70 recovered
plist: 51 recovered
pdf: 50 recovered
others: 112 recovered
  Stop
My internal HDD seems to be used as RAM. There are no files written to it, but the free space dropped from 100GB to 110MB. It is now growing again, though.
free space on destination drive is staying and not changing since pass2 is over.
