Hello!
I am really thankful for any help!
I have an External HD- Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 USB Drive.
When I bought the HD I created 4 partitions. Some days ago the HD fall down,
and since 2 days one Partition tells me to format otherwise it not useable.
I did not do anything since I have important data on that partition.
I ran Testdisk with quick search and deep search (where I found my lost parition again and I can see all the data) and now I am at the point to rename the partitions,
but think I accidently changed them already.
Now I don´t know what to do.
I dont know how to proceed with Test Disk to save my Data....

Re: Partition wants to be formatted
I'd need some more infos.
On your Photo, is your first partition the affected one?
Can you still list your data under Quick or Deeper Search?

Would it be possible to describe what you changed and what do you want to rename?now I am at the point to rename the partitions, but think I accidently changed them already.

Re: Partition wants to be formatted
Hello Fiona,
thanx for you reply!
I am not sure whether I actually changed something or not.
I am stuck at the point where the step by step instruction says:
"Using the left/right arrow keys, change the status of the selected partition to L(ogical".
I might have acidently changed them already when I was using the keys to view the data of each partition.
Yes the first one on the Photo is the affected one. Now I uploaded a photo of the data as well.
Now I also took a look at the status of the partitions with the Windows Vista Partition manager.
(I am running Vista on my laptop) I thought that the status I can see there might be the status of the partitions I should assign to the Partitions in Test Disk. Is that correct?
When taking a look with the Partition manager I also saw that the damaged partition appears as RAW instead of NTFS.

Re: Partition wants to be formatted
Your current partition table is almost correct.
http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3/down ... php?id=389
Except your second partition "volume" is an active partition and bootable.
But it's nothing to take care of.
That's why, there is no reason to change/write anything to your partition table.
Your first partition appears as RAW.
But your boot sector is valid.
It indicates that your file system is damaged.
In your case, it would be advisable to copy both folder "backup and documents" to another intact disk or partition.
At the bottom of your screen you'll find all the commands.
Standard destination to copy your data is your TestDisk folder.
Checking that two dots and press enter, will change directories.
To open a folder, you can check it and use your right arrow key.
After backing up your data, you can run chkdsk driveletter: /r on your affected partition, to have a try to repair your file system.
Because of dropping down, you should test the condition of your HDD using CrystalDiskInfo also!
