External HD not recognised

#1 Post by bear »

Hi, I know this is a popular question and have tried reading through the many threads but am unsure what relates directly to my problem and how to resolve it.

I have a 2TB Seagate external drive which was working fine up to yesterday afternoon. I had multiple power surges, yesterday, which caused the drive to switch off and on quite a few times in a matter of seconds and have a feeling that this has caused the drive to malfunction.

When I try to access the drive I get this message:
TD 001.PNG
TD 001.PNG (24.8 KiB) Viewed 3464 times
So, after a quick bit of research I tried ChkDsk and got this answer:
TD 003.PNG
TD 003.PNG (55.84 KiB) Viewed 3464 times
So a few more hours on the internet and I found TestDisk (I've tried to upload the TD log but as it appears to be a .log format it will not upload, so I am uploading the step by step process as screenshots, below. The last image shows the stage I am at now and I am wary about going any further as I don't have the first idea about what I am doing. The hard drive contains files which cannot be easily replaced relating to my business and I cannot afford to lose them as they are required for two ongoing jobs which must be completed this week... you could say I'm in a bit of a panic. If the disk cannot be repaired to a point where my computer can see it, is there a way I can transfer the files from the old drive to a new one, assuming I go and buy another drive? I am working on a Toshiba laptop, running windows Vista. Thanks, in advance for any help and advice you can give. Screenshots follow...

For some reason the message board is not letting me add more images, so I will add them in subsequent replies...

Try TestDisk, Advanced, Boot, RebuildBS, List. If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit, restart your computer.
Please post the testdisk.log file content if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the quick reply, before I try your suggestion I will let everyone have a look at the progress (or not) that I had made prior to my original posting. As I stated, I tried to post the TD log but the message board said that it could not be posted beccause it was the wrong file type.

These are screen shots of what I did yesterday and where I am at today... (apparently I can only add 3 files per message, as I have quite a few I will post in following messages too.)
