Cannot recover WD 3TB partition.

#1 Post by radagast »

Hi all,
I was trying to recover the partition of my external 3TB HDD by using testdisk. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful. I followed the procedure but it shows the same problem again.

Here is my setup:
1. Linux Mint 18.2
2. HDD connected through USB
3. HDD size: 3 TB, 1 NTFS partition

I am posting my screenshots here,

I have restarted the PC and it seems it didn't work.

My log file looks life this,

Code: Select all

Sat Sep 23 19:36:29 2017
Command line: TestDisk

TestDisk 7.0, Data Recovery Utility, April 2015

Hint for advanced users. dmsetup may be used if you prefer to avoid to rewrite the partition table for the moment:
echo "0 5860464640 linear /dev/sdb 2048" | dmsetup create test0

interface_write()
 1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 4 5 45599 165 6 732558080 [3tb]
write!

write_mbr_i386: starting...
write_all_log_i386: starting...
No extended partition
You will have to reboot for the change to take effect.

TestDisk exited normally.
Anyone have any idea what am I missing here?

Run TestDisk, ANalyse, Quick Search, use 'a' to manually add the partition
HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 267349 121 35
Set this partition as *(bootable), the other (if any) as D(eleted).
On next screen, choose Write and confirm.

Now, choose Advanced, you must have
1 * HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 267349 121 35 4294967295
Choose Boot, RebuildBS, List. If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit
Restart your computer.

Thanks for the reply. I followed the procedure you have suggested and come up with this after clicking rebuild,

The partition listed in your screenshot doesn't match the partition I told you to recover...
