TestDisk Quik Search

#1 Post by j7m1 »

Hi Folks, new to all of this , I got the improper boot device message at the weekend on windows 8 laptop, took out the hard drive and connected to a windows 10 laptop it could not read it, download testdisk and have been following the guides, I got the detail below and hit return for quick search about 2.5 hrs ago, has this frozen or does this take time, Im not sure if the drive is 500gb or 1TB, I do hear clicking from the disk every now and again so assume something is going on?

Thanks a mill in advance, I have years of song making on the drive and really don't want to lose it. (should have backed up, yes)

I think your disk contains bad sectors.
Try to clone the disk to a new empty disk using ddrescue as described in https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf
Once it's done, remove the original disk and try to access your data on the clone.

Thank you kindly for the reply, I really am a complete novice here but will have a go at what you have suggested, can I use a 1tb external usb harddrive for this?
