Can I Increase the Speed of Recovery by Adjusting Initial Parameters

#1 Post by malcolm »

I'm using PhotoRec to recover files from an external USB 125GB. The recovery process has been running for several days and the estimated duration is another week. That is a little bit longer than I anticipated the job would take when I began. :)

I'm wondering if I should stop the process and start again. Is it possible to get better performance by modifying the initial parameters?

In addition, I have some questions about the current process.

The first few lines of the output at the moment are:

Code: Select all

PhotoRec 7.2-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, July 2019

Disk /dev/rdisk3 - 123 GB / 114 GiB (RO)
Partition Start End Size in sectors
 1 * HFS 32 0 1 240254975 0 1 240254944

Destination /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/space_bak/recup_dir

Pass 1 - Reading sector 71756960/240254944, 21104300 files found
Elapsed time 73h33m10s - Estimated time to completion 172h42m53
Several items in the output stand out for me:
  • The line beginning with "Pass 1 - Reading sector" has two numbers "71756960/240254944". The number 71756960, which I assume is the current sector, has not changed, although the number of files found climbs steadily.
  • The estimated time to completion increases approximately 2 seconds for each second that the program has been running.
For both items, is that normal behaviour or does it indicate an issue?

thanks,

The last directory to be created is empty but the one before that contains a file. Here's the output.

Code: Select all
