External HD Partition: read error

#1 Post by tianchris »

Hi everyone,
I'm italian person and I try to write in my best English.
I have a problem with my external HD. It's a NTFS 1 Tb Toshiba HD with USB 3.0 with only 1 partition. Some day ago, when I connected it to my pc, it was very slow to recognized and I saw the massage

"There might be a problem with some file on this device or disc. This can happen if ....
- Scan and fix
- continue without scanning"

I tried "scan and fix" then "analyse and correct" but it seemed to don't detect any error. After that I could access to my file and I had copied 1 directory with 20 Gb on it. Now, when I connect with my Asus pc with Windows 10.0 Pro, I can't see it in my pc. I only see it in "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the taskbar (I can see "Remove External Toshiba USB 3.0") and in "Task manager"

Disk 1 |
Unknown | 931,51 Gb
931,51 Gb | Unallocated
Not Inizialized |

So I have tried with Testdisk as administrator. I create a new log file, select the disk, select the partition table [Intel], select [Analyse] and then I see "partition: read error". So I select [Quick search]. During analyse cylinder, I see Read error at 0/17/1 (lba=1071). Analyse goes up to 100% and then I see the partition

>* HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 121601 25 24 1953519616 [Toshiba]

If I select "P: list file", I see files, I can copy they but their sizes are not the original sizes that I can remember and that I can see in the list file.
So I push Enter and I try to "Write partition". After Y and restart of the pc, the problem is the same.

Recuperation told me to try with smartmontools and publish here my log. This is it:
