TestDisk not working

#1 Post by logicalshrapnel »

Hello,

I have run into the unfortunate problem of a raid 5 ext4 set where two of three disks have failed. I want to try using TestDisk to restore them to operation (or PhotoRec) to rescue my files.

This is a Mandiva machine.

I've installed TestDisk and run it. It finds all the drives but as soon as I select one of the broken ones (sda) it spits out a garbled message and shuts down TestDisk.

This is what I get:

Code: Select all

0359 /lib/libext2fs.so.2.4

Re: TestDisk not working

#2 Post by remy »

Use 6.14 instead of old 6.11.

But it would be better to diagnose (and solution) without testdisk.

give feedback of :

Code: Select all

cat /proc/mdstat
and explain how was your raid made. You don't have 4 disks with the same size.

Then, gice feedback of mdadm --examine on each member of the raid. For exemple if the raid was made on disks :

Code: Select all

sudo mdadm --examine /dev/sda
(or sdb, sdc, and so on)
if it was made on partitions :

Code: Select all

sudo mdadm --examine /dev/sda1
(and/or sda2, sda3, sdb2, sdb3 and so on...)

last, but not least, check if your disks are healthy :

Code: Select all

udisks --show-info /dev/sda
I don't know if udisks worksd under mandriva.
In that case, install smartmontools and run

Code: Select all

smartctl -a /dev/sda
(and for each disk of the raid)

Re: TestDisk not working

#3 Post by logicalshrapnel »

Thank you for the quick replies Remy. I found this tool and board when I had almost given up.
I got TestDisk working perfectly once I got the correct version in place. I hadn't realized that the one that came with the distro was old.

But out of sheer luck I found one more website talking about restoring raid sets and two commands later my set is back in business. I still don't have a clue why it stopped working, I still have some very weird things in the configurations, but I am not touching anything else until my backup has finished copying the files.

In the end I don't think I need TestDisk, but if you are willing to help me get the RAID set configured correctly anyway I would be most appreciative. If not I completely understand that too.

The setup consist of three drives, 2 of which are 120GB drives with only the RAID partition and one larger driver where I have made a 120GB partition to use with the other drives (this is also my system drive). I started out setting them up as /dev/md0 but somewhere along the line /dev/md/holisrv2:0 showed up as a name for them as well. Both of those seem to have been working interchangeably for almost all commands but now they seem to be different raid sets.

It was the two 120GB disks that dropped of. sda and sdb while sdf7 was still working.

I managed to recover the RAID set when I finally executed the command

Code: Select all

# mdadm --assemble --force /dev/md/holirv2:0
It would however not work with md0 since that is not in my /etc/mdadm.conf file. And it did not include the previously only working partition sdf7 in the result. Instead that one is used in the broken md0.

Here is what I have right now:

Code: Select all

# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md127 : active raid5 sda1[4] sdb1[1]
      234433536 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/2] [UU_]

md0 : inactive sdf7[3]
      125362172 blocks super 1.2

unused devices: <none>

Code: Select all

# cat /etc/mdadm.conf
ARRAY /dev/md/holisrv2:0 level=raid5 num-devices=3 metadata=1.2 name=holisrv2:0 UUID=3bb3eae6:062880d5:7473ce69:73b2b39c

Code: Select all

# mdadm --examine /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdf
/dev/sda:
   MBR Magic : aa55
Partition[0] : 234436482 sectors at 63 (type fd)
/dev/sdb:
   MBR Magic : aa55
Partition[0] : 234436482 sectors at 63 (type fd)
/dev/sdf:
   MBR Magic : aa55
Partition[0] : 30491307 sectors at 63 (type 83)
Partition[1] : 289668015 sectors at 30491370 (type 05)
I guess I should update my entry in/etc/fstab to use /dev/md/holisrv2:0 instead since it is currently showing as below. But isn't it strange that is has been working up until now? holisrv2:0 is something I've seen for many months.

Code: Select all

...
/dev/md0 /mnt/draid ext4 defaults 1 2
...
holisrv2:0, note that only two disks are up

Re: TestDisk not working

#5 Post by remy »

mdadm --examine would have been useful before --assemble --force.
When copying is finished, either you can stop md0, md127, and force reassemble of your raid with the 3 partitions, or you can recontruct a raid with 3 disks of the same size, and partition aligned. You'll have better perfs.
