Kingston SSD sudden fail and partitions missing

#1 Post by sergioc »

Hi, I have a Kingston SUV500/240GB SSD drive which failed recently (overnight) without any warning. It now shows up on the main screen of the BIOS but the destop now says please insert boot disk.

i tried to run testdisk but i am unable to find anything, after that i made a image using ddrescue and run testdisk again using the image, same thing
using the image that i had and using a new ssd where i restore the image to, gives this log:

You posted important logs, but after running ddrescue it would have been worth looking at the ddrescue logfile and the final appearence of the status window of ddrescue in the command line.
You could look into the ddrescue image if there is content other than zero.

Furthermore you might get yourself an uninterruptible power supply or set up a clean system that does not require cutting of mains power to shut it down.
That might extend the life of your SSDs with a remaining life estimation of 11 (% ?) which appears low after having only written 11 Terabytes.

Otherwise contact a professional recovery service.

hello thanks for the replay,
i have the mapfile log not sure that help:
# Mapfile. Created by GNU ddrescue version 1.26
# Command line: ddrescue /dev/sdb /media/sda2/ssd.img /media/sda2/ssdlog.log
# Start time: 2022-07-29 12:57:00
# Current time: 2022-07-29 14:09:09

# current_pos current_status current_pass
0x37E4890000 + 1
# pos size status
0x00000000 0x37E4896000 +
i had look at the terminal after creating the image, but did not show any erros, and the pct rescued was at 100%
You could look into the ddrescue image if there is content other than zero.
i may be being stupid but even searching on google i didn't find the answer, how can i do that?

the PC was turn off during the night, that is the odd part of about this, when check the SMART using the kingston program at says that the ssd have 89% life left so i am assuming that the 11% in this context is inverted

anyway thanks for the help, if you can tell me how I can have it if the image has content I would appreciate it but yes I can already see that I will have to send it to a recovery company, that's why I'm working with the image, the last thing that I want to do is damage the data more

i had look at the terminal after creating the image, but did not show any erros, and the pct rescued was at 100%
Sounds good.
You could look into the ddrescue image if there is content other than zero.
i may be being stupid but even searching on google i didn't find the answer, how can i do that?
Use any hex editor of your choice and open up your image file. Are there only zeros inside? I prefer Hxd (software for Windows) because I can use the vertical slider to move pretty fast across the file.
Furthermore you might get yourself an uninterruptible power supply or set up a clean system that does not require cutting of mains power to shut it down.
That might extend the life of your SSDs with a remaining life estimation of 11 (% ?) which appears low after having only written 11 Terabytes.
the PC was turn off during the night, that is the odd part of about this, when check the SMART using the kingston program at says that the ssd have 89% life left so i am assuming that the 11% in this context is inverted
Thanks for letting me know. With 11 TB written the SMART attribute has to be read differently, indicating another 90 TB that you should be able to write.

You did not mention anythign about the content. File types, length, encryption etc... but you should contact a professional recovery service anyway.
