TestDisk stops at 99% while analysing for lost partitions

#1 Post by axolotl28 »

Something happened to my partition on an external HDD. With a different tool I could see that all my data it is still there, it just can't be mounted in my OS. Looking around the internet I found that I could maybe recover this partition using TestDisk. However when I run the program, it finds the partition but it gets stuck at 99% and I can't cancel it. I can already see the partition, but it doesn't let me do anything with it. Is it necessarily a hardware problem? Other programs didn't have issues reading it.

The partition I am trying to recover is that PictureVault at the beginning. What can I do about it?

What is the "different tool"?

Honestly, I would recommend you to use "other programs" instead.

To exclude hardware problems, please post your smartmontools log file:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10910

Typically during analysis you arrive at a screen that is offering you to select a partition and to list files ("p"-key). Use that key to look inside if this partition contains missing content. If this is the case you can copy its content to another drive and leave the drive unchanged.

Yu might also set the partition status to "primary" and let Testdisk rewrite the partition table afterwards. Upon disconnect and reconnect of the drive your operating system should see the missing partition.
