Ran PhotoRec, many files retrieved, but no ftyp files?

#1 Post by fusionaddict »

A coworker accidentally erased a large number of video files from one of our SSDs and unfortunately they were not recoverable, so I tried to recover them from the SD card instead, which had been formatted since the files were copied onto the system.

I first used RecoverIt, which seemed to confirm that the files were salvageable, but the 100MB limit means I can't use it because I cannot afford the software. So I came across PhotoRec and gave it a try.

I ran the software as instructed on the wiki. However, while many *_mdat.mov and *.mp4 files were found, none of them have the *_ftyp.mov suffix that seems to be required to concatenate.

The mdat files appear to contain the video data itself as they are the appropriate size for such clips. The mp4 files are all 131 KB.

Please help, I am desperate. This footage is irreplaceable.

Does not apply. Please reread my post. No FTYP files were generated even with the listed settings selected. I ran the app twice to be sure. Cannot concatenate without the FTYP files.

Hi guys, thanks for this nice tools, the problem:

- Main disk shared between MAc OSX partition and BootCamp partition
- Bootcamp windows accidentally restablished (not recovery, restablished, deleting users data, folders, etc)
- TestDisk finds almost everything, with folder structure included (almost 50.000 files) however seems that all files are corrupted, I can't open one of the singles files correctly, bad format pdfs, text files with weird characters.... etc.

In the other hand PhotoRec finds also the files but as you know I dont have folder structure or proper name, so it is very difficult to find what I want, but the files are correct and I can open them.
I don't see anything relating to the mdat setting above.

That sentence does not specify the state of mdat setting either.

I have exactly the same problem!
Just ran PhotoRec, retrieved a bunch of mdat.mp4 files, but no ftyp.mp4 files.
Here's a screen capture of everything I recovered:

I did activate "mov/mdat Recover mdat atom as a separate file" in the settings.

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong and why I'm not seeing any ftyp files?

The videos I'm trying to recover are from a SD card used in a Canon G7X mark II, OS: MacOS 12.6.3.

Can you share a valid unmodified video taken with the same camera ?
If possible, run TestDisk, Advanced, Image Creation, compress the image.dd file and share the file via Google Drive or similar (Send me the link by email or PM, no need to share it on the forum itself).

Hi Christophe, I sent a PM with a link to the requested files.
