Keeping existing partitions

#1 Post by gonecurl »

Hi,

I'm using TestDisk in Windows 10.

I had two partitions:

Code: Select all

  MS Data 264192 10737682431 10737418240 [Partition A]
  MS Data 17180133376 23437766655 6257633280 [Partition B]
Unfortunately, Partition A was deleted by a supposedly reliable partition resizer. I did a scan with TestDisk and found this:

Code: Select all

D MS Data 264192 23437768703 23437504512 [Old Partition A]
Originally, Partition A had taken the whole disk. At some point in the past, I resized it and added Partition B.

I checked the file list and it looked good. I knew I would lose Partition B if I restored this, so I copied everything from Partition B to another drive. Then I restored Old Partition A.

Hooray! TestDisk worked. :D I was able to access everything from Partition A. I resized it back to what I wanted.

This what I now see in the current scan results:

Code: Select all

P MS Data 264192 10737682431 10737418240 [Partition A]
The problem is that I want to restore Partition B. When I do a quick search, I get this:

Code: Select all

D MS Data 264192 23437768703 23437504512 [Old Partition A]
D MS Data 17180133376 23437766655 6257633280 [Partition B]
All the data seems to be there. I can browse the file list and it looks fine. However, I don't see Partition A. I only see the Old Partition A that I used for the original restore. I don't want that.

My question is: if I restore Partition B, will it delete the current Partition A?

Thanks!

Hi recuperation,

Is the log file necessary? I'm asking a general question about how this program works.

Before I start "Quick Search" it shows the existing partition.

After the scan, I see the missing partition and not the existing one.

Is it going to keep the existing one if I restore the missing one?

I'm still not clear on this. I don't want to lose the current partition.

Can anyone confirm the behavior of TestDisk?

Should I also see the active partition in quick search? Or is it safe to restore Partition B without that?

I manually restored the Partition B files from backup.

It's disappointing not to get an answer. I think others will have this question:
Does TestDisk delete an existing partition if it isn't in the quick search list?

However, TestDisk did get Partition A back for me and that saved me a lot of time and work.

Thank you!
