Mac OSX Lion - Disk Utility Restore Gone Bad

#1 Post by webletto »

In a pickle. Made a few bad choices, and am in need of assistance. Goal was to migrate data from a 320GB drive to a new 750GB drive. looked up online, got advice to use Disk Utility (within Lions Recovery mode) to "Restore" data from the old drive to the new one. Only problem was the I chose the the source/destination fields incorrectly. So the 750 GB blank drive was copied to the 320 GB drive - which had all my data on it. yikes! i quickly clicked cancel but the damage was done. The drive was replaced by the blank disk... ugghh!

The Lion recovery partition is still there, but the 320 GB hard drive main partition was formatted. Trying to use TestDisk to recover the data, but having a few hiccups.

Running TestDisk on my other MacBook Pro, with the 320GB drive attached via firewire hd dock. Was able to start up the program as admin/sudo, but next screen said i didn't have permission to write/change the disk, even after i unmounted the disk via Disk Utility.

It's now running a Deep Scan, and at 04%, running very slowly. Any advice? The format took only a split second, so i'm hopeful that the data is still sitting there, but the partition data has been obviously been deleted.

Sincerely, Eric

Ok.. it finally finished the Deep Scan - - here's the report...

Disk /dev/rdisk1 - 320 GB / 298 GiB - CHS 625142448 1 1 (RO)

The harddisk (320 GB / 298 GiB) seems too small! (< 882 GB / 821 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partitions can't be recovered:

Structure: Ok. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:
P=Primary D=Deleted
Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type,
Enter: to continue
HFS+ blocksize=4096, 650 MB / 619 MiB

is there anything i can do to recover the formatted partition? any help would be very appreciated, thank you!

What file system or partition type did you try to copy?
HFS+, FAT32 or NTFS?
Might be possible that your partition data is 750 GB instead of 320 GB.
Did your partition have a label like [IT8 Calibration Data CD] or [IPODRESOURC]?

Ok, the new bigger drive that i was trying to migrate to was a brand new Seagate Momentus 750GB. I did format it via Disk Utility first, standard default Mac OS Extended Journaled. The biggest mistake was that i named it "Macintosh HD", the same as the old one, so it was too easy to mix it up w/ the drive that had all the data on it.

The original drive i'm guessing had the same format type, standard Apple fair. it's a MacBook pro 15", running Lion. Is it possible to restore back to the way it was, or do i have to run a recovery software and get individual files. Thanks for the advice!

So yes, when i did the "restore" and mistakenly told it to restore to the wrong drive. the 750 blank drive was copied to the 320GB Drive.

So to answer your questions

What file system or partition type did you try to copy?
Partition type was HFS+

Might be possible that your partition data is 750 GB instead of 320 GB.
Performed Restore by accident via Disk utility from 750gb on a 320gb drive

Did your partition have a label like [IT8 Calibration Data CD] or [IPODRESOURC]?
did some research, the IT8 Calibration is from my scanner, for whatever reason, that name is the software to calibrate a Microtek scanner. The IPODRESOURC is some kind of resource for an apple ipod, i see that other users of the software have come across this partition name...

Try to set the following two partitions to P(rimary)
P EFI System 40 409639 409600 [EFI]
P Mac HFS 409640 623872871 623463232
On next screen, choose Write, confirm, Quit and restart your computer.
