exfat_ucstoutf8 errors while copying deleted files

#1 Post by twohot »

A relation of mine suddenly lost over 1TB of data on his drive -- a really strange phenomenon where files vanished after moving them to the exFAT formatted SSD drive. I am frantically trying to recover anything of value from the old source drive (while investigating the new mysterious drive). I see some "untitled folders" marked as deleted but having relevant contents. I am trying to copy them to another drive. However, I get lots of Failed copy attempts. Successful copies are fewer than the failed ones (running in thousands). I get the following in the log:

Code: Select all

exfat_ucstout8: iconv failed. invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
can't create /path/to/unsuccessful/file/jumbed-text-and-symbols
The above shows up when a file fails to copy. What is going on here? How do I recover the listed (deleted) files?
