testdisk freezes after "Quick Search"?

#1 Post by canet »

My SSD isn’t showing up in Windows Explorer anymore, in the disk manager it is shown as “GPT protective partition”, in CrystalDiskInfo the status is “good”. It had only one partition, where my photos were stored (F:\Fotos).

I started testdisk and used “Analyze”, the “MS Reserved” partition is listed twice. After reading several help pages I know that this points to a corrupted partition or an invalid partition table entry.

I wanted to go further and do the “Quick Search”, but unfortunately testdisk freezes after entering the Quick Search. No further text is displayed and the cursor buttons aren’t working anymore either. There is no opportunity to abort the Quick Search as in the help document mentioned. I restarted the computer with the same result. The log file is attached. Does someone know what the problem can be?
Image

In another try I went in the “Advanced” menu and then on “List”, the result is “Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged.“ After this, I checked the boot sector / the backup boot sector, both are OK. This log file is attached as well.

I noticed that in the log files my OS is wrongly detected as Windows 8, I use Windows 10.

Can someone help me with my problem? Is it possible to save the data of my SSD?

Your disk manager most likely shows that it contains a GPT protective partition, but your disk is not “as GPT protective partition”

in CrystalDiskInfo the status is “good”.
Try to fly an Airbus safely with a traffic light system similar to the one in CrystalDiskInfo. The color indicator in CrystalDiskInfo is an oversimplification not to rely on.

It had only one partition, where my photos were stored (F:\Fotos).

This indicates a possibly physically broken disk and suggests trying to clone the disk as stated in the manual.

Thank you for your reply!
I really wonder why you are not using the equivalent German subforum here. :?
There is a notice on top of the german subforum: "Your help is welcome: there are currently few answers or none to most message posted in the German forum!
If you want to post a request for help, please consider using the English forum."
Because of this I posted it here.
Your disk manager most likely shows that it contains a GPT protective partition, but your disk is not “as GPT protective partition”
I think you are correct, I added the pictures in my first post.
Before please post your smartmontools log file:

No.

I would be very happy to receive further feedback.

Your SMART report suggests possible cable connection problems. Connect your SSD using a different SATA cable to a different internal port and/or even a different computer. Have you run TestDisk in admin mode?

Holy shit you are correct! Thank you very much!

I couldn't see any obvious cable connection problems, but I reconnected both cable ends of the SATA cable and started the computer. Windows was performing a disk check, which wasn't running long. After this, I could see the drive normally in the explorer. As always, the solution is to unplug and plug in again

After reading your answer, I pasted the content of the myreport.txt in ChatGPT and asked for possible problems. ChatGPT regognized the abnormality, that the "UDMA_CRC_Error_Count (ID 199)" is very high and correctly sugessted problems in the cable or the connection.

Was the "UDMA_CRC_Error_Count" also your hint to a cable connection problem?

Anyway, I learned a lot for the future.

Yes.

When having issues, always check your SMART attributes before stressing the disk.

Thank you for giving feedback!
