Hi, Forum heroes at cgsecurity.org!
My old 2TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive on Linux Mint with ext2 partition has decided to end its life ;( - I tried to TestDisk it back without success - PhotoRec seemed to work better and recovered ca. 20 thousand files, now in some 40 directories with 500 files each. This should be happy news, but sadly only a few LibreOffice fiels were recoverd (.odt, .ods, .odp) and only a couple of .pdf files came back - I had hundreds of those files on that drive. Also, more surprisingly, the video .mp4 and image .jpg files did not show up. Some .mpg files appeared but they are fragmented or corrupted.
Any hints/tips/tricks on how to proceed?
Maybe this will help in the analysis:
During the recovery, which took overnight some 8 hours, the destination drive was being dumped with data and looked like it was going to hit the ca. 1.8 TB target (from memory my troubled drive must have contained well over 100 thousand files on a drive almost full), but when arriving this morning the destination drive had only grown by 2 GB (in other words, the destination folder had rougly a thousand times less byte content than I know exists on the troubled partition). One of the largest file recovered/generated turns out to be report.xml - only 102 files exceed 10 MB size - mostly .elf and occational corrupted .gz files.
Is there some setting in PhotoRec that I am missing?
Thank you in advance,
Ragnar.

Re: Linux ext2 partition with low recovery - fractured, corrupted and missing files
It's too late to apply the desired tips.
A typical standard procedure is to run smartmontools analyse the report, cloning the disk in a low stress way using ddrescue as described in the manual.
Applying TestDisk or Photorec directly to a possibly defective disk should be avoided.
If TestDisk fails, use any third party recovery tool on the clone. If everything fails, use PhotoRec.
