Interrupted TestDisk operation on an NVME drive. Now shows as 1mb

#1 Post by van0014 »

After trying to recover a deleted partition with TestDisk, I reached an area where it said "Do not interrupt!". Normally, in partition software if something goes wrong, you delete the partition and try again. But in this case, the warning was there for a really good reason. And I interrupted the process. Now i'm not sure if my NVME is useable again. It shoes up as a 1mb drive, but is a 256gb drive

Serial
BTPY72460HYE256D

I had explored things like changing or deleting the host protected area (HPA), and changing Cylinder, Head and Sector information. Nothing has worked so far.
I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is recoverable

I don't know what you did.

Please consult a professional recovery lab.

When looking at the documentation of the website cgsecurity.org you learn that you are not supposed to use them unless you have a specific reason to do so.

That makes sense. I was thinking it was too far gone. Thanks for looking at this, and concluding it's not worth fixing. I wanted to know, so I won't be spending a few days or weeks on it, trying different things

I'd had a look through the documentation before trying things, and since the drive was reading such incorrect values no matter what partition tool I used, it seemed logical to try and adjust the CHS values. And although they are almost meaningless on an NVME drive, it's worth a shot. It may also only be relevant for MBR formatted drives. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it all. There is limited information about what part of the drive stores the capacity information (what part have I corrupted), and how to correct it
