LVM2 on raid6 partition recovery

#1 Post by MRovis »

New to testdisk and to the forum.
(Actually I am reworking the text that I mis-posted on user pages  )
And I set days aside and am working on this issue solely for a few dozen hours already with very likely more hours ahead for me..
Here is the testdisk.log
It is biggish, but also the issues to solve seem to be a little complex to me.

Code: Select all

TestDisk exited normally.
I'll try and make a short overview of my trouble with my currently unavailable 540GB data LVM2 on RAID6 /dev/md127 partition, which I dare still hope to recover.
In the first place, the following is in Croatian, but someone who is interested into a down-to-earth real reasons behind my possible huge data loss, she/he can have a gander at it.
That's the gizmo which I wouln't give to my enemies for their use, unless they really need be stopped sick from computing! A short look at minute 3rd from start:
http://youtu.be/cjN9dc2YkfE?t=3m20s
And 7th: http://youtu.be/cjN9dc2YkfE?t=7m14s
But it's probably irrelevant that its that particular WD model. Any other disk could have gotten near totally broken by an accidental drop (Or the strange doings on my LVM2 raid6 caught by testdik.log below, could that be viri related?)... Well, if damaged, it is only near totally, that is, not sufficiently broken, for someone with insufficient mind to try to peddle it to you as "new, only formatted"... Yeah, I was said that about the gizmo. Yes, I was! And I saw this "new, only formtted disk" briefly, I really did, with:

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /mnt/sdX
and just a thing or two more, such as what partitions it had, what type and what data was contained therein, but afterwards... Little time afterwards, maybe an hour, can't tell. was busy with other matters... just, the last thing I remember from my glorious LVM2 on RAID6 540GB partition was:
"Bus error!" and that box's monitor went black. Dead! Dead as the dodo! Phew!
Never mind! Back to work.
I'll try and make a plan what to do to recover my data.
In the first place, I made the images of the five disks that make the permanent set in this one of my four similar boxes (all four same AT8-32X Abit MBO, long-years clones of each others, containing Gentoo Linuces, most of the time up to date, such as testing branch ~amd64), in the following way:

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/sda of=12-03-05_at8-g200_sda.dd
and so on for /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, d, and g.
to get these images:

Code: Select all

at8-g250-b sdf1 # ls -l *.dd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 200049647616 2012-03-05 21:08 12-03-05_at8-g200_sda.dd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 250059350016 2012-03-05 23:51 12-03-05_at8-g200_sdb.dd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 250059350016 2012-03-06 02:35 12-03-05_at8-g200_sdc.dd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 250059350016 2012-03-06 05:23 12-03-05_at8-g200_sdd.dd

at8-g250-b sdf1 #
Looking through all the logs so far, I don't remember with certainty, but I think I restarted the machine, and the logs are in two goes. In the first go, the 1.5TB USB 3.5" backup external disk is /dev/sdg, and the last, the fifth system disk drive is /dev/sdf, and in the second go, they swap the naming. Sorry for the incovenience!
I am rather confident I would be able to restore these disks via the files above into the exact state as before I ventured with any looking into their state early yesterday morning.
at8-g250-b is another clone of the four where I'm looking at it now and writing this. My cloned Gentoo's are networked together, I can usually ssh into one from another.
The one clone in question as per the data loss or recover, is at8-g200. Real hostnames, I have more urgent need to recover from this huge potential loss, than to hide anything.
Here follows the telling of smartmontools (basically all PASSED), on the disks in questions.
I have named the output by the command input. Such as

Code: Select all

$ smartctl -H /dev/sdb
got me the file:

Code: Select all

12-03-05_at8-g200_sdb.smartctl-H_sdb
and

Code: Select all

$ smartctl -i /dev/sdb
got me the file:

Code: Select all

12-03-05_at8-g200_sdb.smartctl-i_sdb
Here it all goes. Let it be crystal clear what gizmo I was given and what it did to my carefully maintained Gentoo system!

Code: Select all

Well, I need a short break here, and will be back to analyse as much and as long as needed. My long months of my work is in peril for a peddler of "a new disk, only formatted". Sorry for both of us!

Re: LVM2 on raid6 partition recovery

#2 Post by MRovis »

I have been looking into the whole shebang as deeply as I can, and I know that this contains a clue.

Code: Select all

Disk /dev/sdd - 250 GB / 232 GiB - CHS 30401 255 63 [...] (250 GB / 232 GiB) seems too small! (< 581 GB / 541 GiB) The following partition can't be recovered:
    Linux LVM 1133 1 1 70696 236 48 1117544448
    LVM2, 572 GB / 532 GiB
That is the logical volume containing or sitting on top of, the real md127 raid6.
I have no clue how the small raid5 got to have the same name, when it always bore the name md126 (assembled out of /dev/sd[abcdg]5 raid autodetect partitions).
Even after the plunge into darkness after the dreadful "Bus error!". Once, on the original MBO. Because, needing a known good new environment, I swapped the disks from previously at8-g200's MBO to previously at8-g250-b's MBO, only the hostnames remained as the disks have them inside. That swapping proved to me that the MBO was not at fault, which I had to know for certain, and neither were the disks themselves, other than the would be famous friend of mine's "new, only formatted" exterior USB WD disk.
I believe that I am not going to get any data whatsoever unless I somehow explain to the testdisk program how to reconstruct the LVM2, for which there needs to be recovered workable /dev/md127 raid6, which means at least three of the five of the original raid autodetect partitions, any three of the /dev/sd[abcdg]6.
We can completely forgo /dev/md125 which is assembled out of /dev/sd[abcdg]2 raid autodetect partitions. Irrelevant data there. Those make just the system raid6 device, which is cloned on three more of my Abit AT8-32X boxes.
Likewise the /dev/md126 (which shows up as fake md127 for whichever scary reason), hosts only the /build directory for some huge programs that don't fit in 2GB /dev/shm for compilation.
All we need (or all I need, if no one is following me at this time of my distress; but let the destiny be known later, there's nothing to hide here! God have mercy, if it is agreeable to You!)... All we, or just I, need, is that huge 90% and more of the available space that was there once, LVM2 on /dev/md127 raid6 device.
And I believe I should try and compare what the numbers should look like from some of my backup through the years gone by possibly, as well as comparing with the other three clone-systems.
There is the important difference with the other clone-systems from this currently broken one.
All the other three are made of five 250GB drives. This one uses the available space for /dev/md127 raid6 in question as if all drives were 200GB. It's just, I didn't have enough of 250 G drives, so the raid6 is here different.

I will now simply go through analysis of my broken system through the testdisk menu interface, which will take entire night ahead.
I will not write anything yet again. But I will be able to know whether the system deteriorated (that, to me, would indicate a possible virus) in the meantime.
I will more carefully plan the next steps for me to take in this recovery.
I think the fake /dev/md127, all it's 2GB autoraid fd partitions sd'abcdf]5 (no external USB disk attached now) have to be renamed back to what they were, and what they assembled, and that is /dev/md126, but I have no idea how or if at all that can be accomplished. Else I will have to delete that fake misnomer.
No write will I perform this second time around either.
Thanks if anyone comes up with more insight/advice! :)

Re: LVM2 on raid6 partition recovery

#3 Post by MRovis »

I just wish to post some progress in my plans and understanding.
In the first place, I need to recover the backup of the LVM2 which is, the most recent, in the:

Code: Select all

/etc/lvm/backup/vg
vg is the sole volume group with the sole logical volume on the sole raid6 partition /dev/md127 where the data is.
That /etc/lvm/backup/vg is best and safest if I can recover it from the system under my sysresccd these... days already.
If not, I can try older backups, ther most recent three months ago, but, IIUC, I noticed that LVM2 changes the UUID on events such as breakage or member removed or faulty... There I saw backups as sparse as 6 months in btwn them... So...
But let's first show other thinking minds on this forum what I got with mdadm.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd /root % ls -l /dev/sd[abcdf]2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 2 Mar 6 07:01 /dev/sda2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 18 Mar 6 07:01 /dev/sdb2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 34 Mar 6 07:01 /dev/sdc2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 50 Mar 6 07:01 /dev/sdd2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 82 Mar 6 07:01 /dev/sdf2
at8-g200@sysresccd /root % mdadm -A /dev/md125 /dev/sd[abcdf]2
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sda2: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sda2 has no superblock - assembly aborted
at8-g200@sysresccd /root %
Hey, what do ya mean busy? (Jesus, I didn't even think of trying to stop it yet...
Now comes to mind... Naah, wouldn't start.
I bet! I''d bet my money I spend on food each month, and gladly fast a day or two,
and be happy to lose the bet! Jest to get /dev/md125 up and mount it and
recover that raid6... But I will give it a try!
But first, let's go through what a mess this is.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd /root % mdadm -A /dev/md125 /dev/sd[bcdf]2 missing
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sdb2: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sdb2 has no superblock - assembly aborted
at8-g200@sysresccd /root % mdadm -A /dev/md125 /dev/sd[cdf]2 missing
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sdc2: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sdc2 has no superblock - assembly aborted
man mdadm is my friend and she told me to try the following.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd /root % mdadm -Q /dev/md125
/dev/md125: is an md device which is not active
at8-g200@sysresccd /root %
mdadm sure don't run out of ideas easily.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd /root % mdadm -Q /dev/sda2
/dev/sda2: is not an md array
/dev/sda2: device 2 in 5 device undetected raid6 /dev/md125. Use mdadm --examine for more detail.

I guess I will issue:

Code: Select all

mdadm -v -A /dev/md125 /dev/sd[acd]2 --force
only in a half hour, after second thoughts and things.
Scary. Days on this, and very dim and vague all of it...

Worked.
I hope no power outage is due in my part of town...
I'll be back to tell more.
Right now I m copied to a safe place on another of my boxes, the /etc from the system under recovery.
First thing I did was of course:

Code: Select all

mkdir /mnt/md125
mount /dev/md125 /mnt/md125
cp -a /mnt/md125/etc/lvm /mnt/a-safe-place/
Be back.

That's where I prepare what I will post here.
I only now issued mdadm -D /dev/md125. It's I just knew what it would show.

Re: LVM2 on raid6 partition recovery

#8 Post by MRovis »

This is where I found out where to look for backup of my LVM2 volume (the "payload" I grabbed first thing above).
"Recovering a Lost LVM Volume Disk":
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/appnote/19386.html
I'll be reading again and more on the issue. Now.
Either that or maybe I recover the other raid6 volume /dev/md127 like I recovered this one?
I'll take my time...
God bless the fine CGSecurity Forum owners and administrators and the users!
Many happy partitions and data recoveries to yer all!

Here's some more tries.

It's mostly non-expert hopefully inconsequential tinkering and attempting at understanding
of the raid6 /dev/md127 current state and getting it to working state.
For that reason, I didn't feel I should post it straight here. It would hamper and encumber more than necessary.
But it you skim through it, I did get the mis-named 9GB raid5 (misnamed as /dev/md127) back to its place: /dev/md126.
Other progress I have not made.
Still the data is not accessible. The 560GB or however much, on the LVM2 sitting on top of raid6 /dev/md127.
Clearly, once that raid6 /dev/md127 is brought back, all should be well.

Re: LVM2 on raid6 partition recovery

Here's something strange. Follow what /dev/mdstat says
on --assemble (-A) attempts of /dev/md127.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd % mdadm -S /dev/md127
mdadm: stopped /dev/md127
at8-g200@sysresccd % mdadm -D /dev/md127
mdadm: cannot open /dev/md127: No such file or directory
at8-g200@sysresccd % cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md126 : active raid5 sda5[0] sdf5[4] sdd5[3] sdc5[2] sdb5[1]
      9638400 blocks level 5, 128k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]

md125 : active raid6 sdb2[3] sdf2[0] sdd2[1] sdc2[4] sda2[2]
      19277568 blocks level 6, 128k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]

unused devices: <none>
at8-g200@sysresccd %
Clean slate above, right.
Array stopped, else no assembling.

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd % mdadm -A -v -v /dev/md127 --super-minor=dev
mdadm: --super-minor=dev given, and listed device /dev/md127 doesn't exist.
at8-g200@sysresccd %
This attempt, a deprecated one, only for mdadm version 0.90
(mine, as I haven't learned iniramfs yet) is futile too.
But let's see how we fare assembling by the UUID?

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd %
You can see it found all the necessary drives actually.
The problem is, at first glance, even though giving it double verbose options (-v -v), it still
isn't telling us which two drives are the good ones?
And, at deeper look, there is a very strange thing showing up in the /proc/mdstat
which I told you to take notice in the beginning of the post!

Code: Select all

at8-g200@sysresccd % cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md127 : inactive sdf6[0](S) sdc6[4](S) sdb6[3](S) sda6[2](S) sdd6[1](S)
      931287360 blocks

md126 : active raid5 sda5[0] sdf5[4] sdd5[3] sdc5[2] sdb5[1]
      9638400 blocks level 5, 128k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]

md125 : active raid6 sdb2[3] sdf2[0] sdd2[1] sdc2[4] sda2[2]
      19277568 blocks level 6, 128k chunk, algorithm 2 [5/5] [UUUUU]

unused devices: <none>
at8-g200@sysresccd %
It took all my devices as spares! And they don't look faulty or removed at all,
but just spares: the (S) is for "spare".
I think the message about assembling "from 2 drives" might simply be
misleading, but I can't figure out what to try at this point.
