Partition and file system lost when copying with Testdisk

#1 Post by jervis »

Hi,

I've got a Seagate FREEAGENT GO 0.2 FAMILY 500GB. I could not access the data in harddisk, but could see the drive volume (F:) under window XP.I downloaded testdisk tool to recover the data. I tried to use and follow the instructions step and step. I could see the primary partition(only one partition) and list the file directory, then testdisk provides the complete file system and copy file option. it is really cool!

When copying file, it started recovering some files(10%) to destination. Unfortunately, testdisk stopped copying for a long time and no response, but it shows quit. After quitting and re-launching, the disk is detected but no partition could be found!! although i tried quick search and deep search, it shows always : read error!! I couldn't see the partition and file system any more!!

Is it the disk partition and table destroyed due to copying crash?

Could testdisk expert help how to get back the partition and file system?

Thanks a lot!

Sry during the last couple of days my internet connection worked bad.
But now it's a lot better because technician from german telekom solved it temporarily.
Looks like your LBA (Logical Block Addressing) from your disk is bad?
TestDisk doesn't change anything to your disk.
When you tried to copy data and testdisk doesn't respond or hang will indicate that your file system is damanged or doesn't get recognized..
The first steps are;
Got to your device manager.
Check how your disk is listed.
Compare name, model.
Second step is check your disk management console.
Please upload a screen shot.
Use CrystalDiskInfo to check your current disk status;
http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... ex-e.html/

As far as possible don't stress your disk anymore and don't change anything where you're not 100 % sure.

Hi Fiona,
Thank you so much for looking into my case. :)

In fact, I recovered ~10% data by using testdisk. it was really surprising testdisk quit in middle of copying, and then the partition and file directory are gone. :(

i followed your instructions and got two screenshots (device manager.jpg, disk managemetn.jpg) which show no issue on disk.

From Crystal Disk Info it's better to upload a screen shot.
YWould it be possible to diagnose your boot sector?
Run a revbuild BS and afterwards list your files and have another try to copy them.
If it hangs again please let me know.
In this case it would be advisable to clone your disk!

Procedur might be just like in this case;
