Partition recovery succeded but still fails..

#1 Post by xpmule »

I am going insane and I am desperate for some help from an expert. I've been trying to
recover a partition for close to 3 days straight and failing (even when programs say they worked)
And Hi by the way and thanks for the software :)

What i have is a WD Green 1TB EARS drive (sata) and i *was using it for Windows 7 x64
and then a 2nd partition for Storage. I tried some tools to revocer my partition from an old
hirens bootcd and 2 of them said they recovered it but after checking they did NOT. (no change)

I'll back up a bit.. So i wanted to re-install windows and i've been doing this for a good decade+
so this is nothing new for me and i have also fixed computers for a bunch of companies and probably
between 100 and 150 people over the last 10 years so I am no noob with a pc lol
Anyway, i did what i usualy do and fire up the windows cd (Win7 x64) and i selected the 100mb partition
and the windows partition and selected delete. (this had always worked well with the xp disc before)
But the problem is i had trouble getting my dvdrw to read the disc a little bit so i wasn't sure
everything was ok but i had no other options (had a spare dvdrw but gave it away)
So what happens next has caused me to lose about 750gigs of data that i collected over many years..
I clicked the RESET button on my computer
Why ? well like i said i thought cd was acting sketchy and the formatting progress was taking forever
and on windows xp's cd the formatting was always quick, AND NO i did not select format i meant
create partition, i have done NO formatting at all at any time ! And i also i have not used the drive since
i grabbed a spare drive and installed win 7 x64 on that and of course it doesn't show up in windows, but
computer / Disc Management shows it and says unallocated and a pop up says i must initialize it to use it
and if I say yes it fails withs an error number.

Each program i try takes 3-4 hrs to scan and attempt a fix/fail, I have tried scanning with TestDisk 6.14 (x86)
and it didn't find my partition at first but found it on a deeper scan i select L to make it logical and selected
write and it seemed to stall so i hit enter a couple more time and looked away for a couple seconds
and the menu had changed and i couldn't get back to the screen to try and fix my boot record.
So i just completed the normal scan and now i'm going to try the deeper scan again (3rd time im doing all this)
Oh almost forgot.. before i picked write last time.. i hit p and could see my files perfectly fine

and i think what the windows disc did was got about 36gb into creating a partition before i hit the reset button and the first 150gb of data on the drive is my old windows and is of no use to me. So the data
i want recovered is located after the 150gb sector position Also i wrote down from and old hdd program from
hirens bootcd by partition info i have the first, last, length and boot sec location written down.

So i hope this (TestDisk) can work when all others failed, i tried "MiniTool Partition Recovery" before hand,
and it said it worked but it actualy did nothing whatsoever. (just like 2 other older dos programs i tried)

Lastly i seen someone post about adding a partition, could that help me if i had the sector data written down ?

Tired of watching 4 hour progress bars go by for nothing over and over with every program i try.
I can't see why i shouldn't be able to fix the partition some how.

I'll post back when i try the TestDisk tutorial again.. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--> edit:
Ok i tried again and it failed again.. don't know what to do now :(
i selected Primary for my found partition and selected write and then it said "partition write error" [ok]

Would it be possible to provide some infos about TestDisk / Analyse from your current partition table?
Also Quick Search and if it doesn't find any partition from Deeper Search also!
You can upload screens or copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log file.

Well i can post screens if i redo again the whole scan run again, currently
i just turned the program off since i failed to do anything usefull with it lol

i also edited my first posted with my second run results.

my log file is 24kb large so is that too big to put into a comment reply in the forum ??

in thank you very much for the swift reply :)

Re: Partition recovery succeded but still fails..

#5 Post by xpmule »

Well some time today I'm going to try and format my problem drive.
I have tried tried TestDisk like 3 or 4 times and it can't write my partition back :(
Although I would advise TestDisk to anyone with partition problems and especially
advanced computers user, it has more advanced options than any other I've seen.
First rate program.. VERY good :)
I've coded a few programs over the years and i usually cringe when i see one made
as a console based application but TestDisk works really well like that, so to anyone considering it ?
don't let the console based system deter you from trying it out, it actually works better that way.

Individual file recovery programs are a dime a dozen so i grabbed one and I'm going to give that a shot..
I would use TestDisk for that but I REALLY need the file names and folders etc
I mostly just wanna recover a couple hundred gigs of TV shows i have saved.
So I'm trying EASUES Data Recovery Wizard Pro right now and its scanned my partition for 5hrs
and it says its gonna finish in 3.5 more hrs LOL
This is the 3rd day I've put my life on hold :(
scanning.. scanning... scanning.... scanning.....
ARGGGGGGHHHHH !!!1111

Anyway if anyone has any idea why I'm getting a read-only partition problem let me know..
This is the same in other programs in a DOS enviroment with programs such Active@ PartitionRecovery
and the same problem happened with Winternals Disk Commander (partition recovery)
And from within windows same problem etc.. various programs detect the missing partition
and *try and write it back and they ALL fail.

If anyone is curious my drive is about one year old and the only issue with it has been a report
of 2 weak sectors after some computer crashing too many times (from overclocking too hard)
But these obviously get mapped out so no big deal with that.. i got smart reports from many tools
including "Hard Disk Sentinel" and "HD Tune Pro" Only other notable thing with my WD Green Drive
is when i bought it, i plugged it in right away and change the firmware setting "Head Park Time"
from a small amount, like 4/5 seconds to the traditional 5/6 minutes (with the tool W.D. wdidle.exe)
And i can't see that being a problem cause its been good like that for a year.

Pretty rare when something can't be fixed but i think i have to face facts..
I wish the other people in here struggling right now the best of luck with their problems !
My heart goes out to ya people, this kinda problem sucks beyond words :(

edit:
i managed to get some progress.. what i did different was use version 6.13 from in DOS
and this time i selected restore for all 3 of the orig partitions, instead of just the one i wanted.
It asked me if I wanted to fix the boot sector on the 100mb reserved partition and said yes
and it said they matched afterwards, but i thought i would get to do the same for the other 2 partitions
but i didn't see anywhere i could do that with out starting the scanning all over again.
So while in DOS still i fired up "Ranish Partition Manager" and suprise ! i could see the 3 partitions
so i shut it off and went to windows and still the same problem in there, disk manager shows unalocated
and uninitialized (i didn't try and init that drive either, i don't think that would help anything)
So i loaded up TestDisk 6.14 in windows and it could now see the 3 partitions i fixed in DOS
progress ?? BUT i got a warning that the starting cylinder and ending don't match on 2 of the partitions.
which got me wondering, the main partition i want back is labeled "Storage" but there is another one
detected same size with no label with a slightly different location.. i wonder if i restored the wrong one ?
Im going to see if i can fix the boot sector on the 2nd and 3rd partitions

Re: Partition recovery succeded but still fails..

#6 Post by xpmule »

i edited my post above..

also i hope its ok to stop the scan when i see the partitions i am after ???
i tried doing that and it seems to work fine.
Also since i wasn't getting any useful results from the normal scan,
i stopped it at 0% and went right away to a deep scan. and then stopped that scan too
once i cold see any partition i know exists have been found (no point in scanning / no more partitions exist)
This saved me a TON of time big time !!!!

i've also had random issues with my drive not detected by the bios every once in a while
i forgot to mention that.. i did some testing and like i suspected before i think its a power issue.
I have a 550 watt crappy brand psu.. and a spare 500watt cooler master
so I shoved a paper clip in the spare psu and plugged in the psu (switch was off)
and plugged in only my sata drive not my other 2 ide drives and hit the power switch
and i could hear my drive power up so then hit the power button on my computer.
I was stunned at how much faster the first screen bios HDD detection finished, AND
now with the sata drive running on its own power supply i rebooted a million times
and it was detected instantly every single time.. so i ditched the spare psu and shuffled a bunch
of stuff around to lower power consumption and the drive is still detecting fast at boot
so i think i definatly have power issues, wether that has anything to do with partition problems
i kinda doubt it.. lol
And thanks for reading (my book is on on Amazon) <-- Wall-o-Text on paper back and hard cover ;)

Hi Fiona ..i seen your reply to me on another topic ;)
Just so you know its gonna take me more time to restore my data
so my problem hard drive is still available if you have any ideas for me..
And i have checked (with TestDisk) the boot record and its reporting ok..
I had restored the partition and viewed the status and it said that they didn't match
so i used restore from backup and then they said they NOW match and that didn't make any
difference i still could not get windows to mount it even after rebooting or
trying mount command with Paragon partition manager. So at that point i tried
rebuilding it with TestDisk and rebooting etc and no change. i've even even tried
redoing the restore partition with TestDisk and still no change.. I've done a lot and,
no matter what i can't get the Windows 7 x64 OS to see my partitions but strangely
if i use Ranish Partition manager from DOS it reports them as seen and if restore them
TestDisk sees them and if i open up Paragon Manager from windows that too see's them also ..weirdness !

Your the expert so if you have any ideas i can still give it a shot..
I'm stumped at this point.
I found it strange that i was only able to restore partion 3 after
i restored 1,2,3 at the same time.. Like i said at first i couldn't get TestDisk to restore
only the 3rd one because it would say Partition: "write error"

Partition read error means that you have a bad sector.
It doesn't mean that is physically damaged because it could be a softbad also (softbad is repairable).
And it's your partition table.
Probably you must initialize your disk in your disk management console.
Sometimes, Viruses, Antivirus and programs like Norton Goback, Norton Sonar prevent MBR from modifying.
You can test it using msconfig.
Disable all at Start.
Check that tab services also and check hiding microsoft services.
Microsoft services shouldn't be disabled.
Disable the other services..
Restart and diagnose it again.
Anyway, that description above is only for restoring purposes.
But if any read error occur, it's advisable to backup data first.
That's why it might be a good idea to backup/copy your data first.
Please check your disk using CrystalDisk Info;
http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... ex-e.html/
