Was using my laptop then froze it and crashed. Tried to restart, now it says error , operating system not found. So i found testdisk and now trying it. It found my HD when i connected my laptop HD to another computer. Got to the part where to do a quick search. But it hasn't moved since I started the quick search (been like 2 hrs). any advice? should it take this long? Thanks.

Laptops often using another geometry of 240 heads.
It's only a check, but I'll see, if it makes any difference?

Confirm in TestDisk through until you see the menu Analyse.
Your affected disk must be selected and partition table type Intel chosen.
Don't confirm at Analyse, but Geometry!
Check Heads.
Change the value to 240.
Press enter.
Check OK and hit enter to leave the menu.
Go to Analyse and repeat your Diagnose.
Upload a screen from Analyse (the current partition structur) and a screen from Quick Search (Result).

Further information will follow.
It's only a diagnose, you'll not change anything.

Would it be possible to upload the screen after Analyse from your current partition structur?

There are read errors in sectors.
Please quit TestDisk:
I don't want to stress your disk as much.
In your TestDisk folder, you'll find a file testdisk.log.
Can you copy the content and paste it here?

It looks like that there are only read errors.

Can you put your disk back into your laptop and repeat your diagnose using a live CD?
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Livecd
It might be possible that you don't run into CRC-errors.
You will get it, if no read error appears, when you run Quick Search.
If you still see read error on your screen, please stop your scan right now and let me know.
I'll avoid stressing your harddrive.
You don't need to change your geometry.

If you have trouble using a LiveCD, please let me know.

Tried Bootmed, and UBCD .. no luck so far to get a workin livecd (USB) ... which one do you recommend? Both seem to get to a point and stall and do nothing before even gettin to Testdisk.

Dos your harddisk make an unusual repeated noise ? I wonder if the disk head isn't damaged, it can explain why all read operations failed.
