Might Have Ruined Xmas - Cant Find Partition!

#1 Post by 19ninety »

Hi,
Background: With the intention of being able to watch our family movies and photos on our Smart blu-ray player I plugged my USB HDD into a Smart blu-ray/freeview recorder box, the HDD clunked three times (as though it was being switched on then off again quickly), then under the USB HDD options I selected some options to add the drive the Smart blu-ray box. Followed by the HDD clunking three more times. Using the Smart blu-ray file browser I saw no files at all!
So I then plugged the HDD back into my PC, as the clunks didnt sound healthy and no data was showing using the Smart blu-ray browser, the drive is not seen by the OS (Win7). I ran the partition tool in the OS in case the drive had died and it says Disk9 needs to be initialized, I cancelled that and then ran testdisk.

Following the instructions online testdisk sees my drive but when selecting [Intel] then [Analyse] but nothing is found. I assume this is because the Smart Blu-Ray has deleted the partition or formatted the drive?

I retried using [None] then [Analyse] and the image below is of the results after a 18hour scan and the log file.

I see it says to check the jumper & BIOS settings but the drive is connected via a USB dock and is a SATA drive. It also says several partitions cannot be recovered.

There was over 200gb or family movies and photos (including our daughters first Christmas this year and 5 years of my own amateur photography work) and my girlfriend is going to go crazy, I mean ... CRAZY if I've just lost the lot.

Should I re-initialze the disk in windows try and run data recovery on the HDD ... if so what free/cheap program would be best? Or is there anything else I can do?

Did you use the 64-bit version of TestDisk?
It's only intended for 64-bit-versions without WOW64.
As long as you're using Vista, Win7-8 you should use the 32-bit-version.
Would it be possible to repeat your diagnose?
Especially the result of TestDisk Deeper Search!
Easily select your physically disk.
Pleas upload another screen from your disk management console including data from your external disk, too!
In some cases, Linux- and Unix-partitions writing backups of superblocks across the file system.
In rare cases, windows file systems like NTFS and FAT32 got damaged.
In case datarecovery software was helpful.
But it might be appropriate to diagnose your disk first, using testdisk.

Hi,
Ah, my OS is 64bit and I see now in the notes now for v6.14 beta! I'll re-try using v6.13.
I had started a DeepSearch lastnight in v6.14 but cancelled it as took a couple of hours to cover 2%.
After I tried running the free version of EaseUS recovery just to see what it might find and after 2.5hrs it returned very good results!
I'm going to try Piriform Recuva and see if that has good results. I'd like to get as much off the drive as possible before trying to repair it in case that just makes things worse.

Currently, TestDisk 6.14WIP beta is recommended.
In case, use the 32 bit version
Please let me know about your recovery results.
If TestDisk would find your partition and displays your data, you can use testdisk to copy your data to another disk or intact partition first, before you're going to write a partition or repairing a boot sector.
Please let me know your datarecovery results first!
