CHS Numbers for Seagate ST3400620AS

#1 Post by steve1916 »

The Seagate specification provides: 16,383:16:63, but this is a 400 GB drive and 16,383 shows up in TestDisk 6.13 as about 125 GB. To get 400 GB to show up in TestDisk 6.13, the number of cylinders needs to be about 48,640. I found this by trial and error, but this can't possibly be the correct way to use TestDisk? Can someone please point me to the correct method of determining the proper CHS values? I've been searching and reading the website for 2 days and just haven't been able to find this information. I also notice an inconsistency of units between a number of sources, so there is a lot of confusion about read/write heads and heads per cylinder, sectors and sectors per track, etc. This issue is also complicated by the differences between physical items and the virtual items needed to support the unusual development of file systems and larger and larger drives over the years. The attached file shows the System Reserved, C: partition, and a D:partition. I found files in all 3, the others are empty.

Thanks,
steve1916

Edited 1-7-13:
Please read thru to the last post (on page 2 of 2) as Fiona provides key information that made my efforts
successful. Thank you very much Fiona! I'm still not sure how to figure the correct cylinders
or if there is a database of this information, or if just a large guess that includes the drive
size is all that is needed. Additional information and help with this would be a valuable help
for anyone that has little or no experience with using TestDisk.

Following Fiona's suggestions, I was able to recover the two important partitions. The third
partition did not contain any important information. I moved the drive from my working Windows 7
computer and replaced it in the original system. The system would not boot up, but I ran Startup
Repair from the Windows 7 DVD. This did not work the first time. I also ran Bootrec.exe
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392) and then ran Startup Repair again and the system finally booted into Windows 7.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, and Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (from a bootable
Linux CD), but found no evidence of virus attack. Maybe it was due to power loss at the wrong
time? This is a friend's system, but they weren't sure what happened.

Fiona's post contains several very helpful bits of information, but if you are using the english
language version, please ignore comments about partition status on the right side. In the
english version they appear on the left side of the screen.

I also compared TestDisk partition status to a known good system and found that System Reserved status was Primary (P) and the windows folder partition was Primary Bootable (*). By chance, while searching for more information, I found a Microsoft Tech forum that indicated the System Reserved partion is not required for Windows 7 unless you are using BitLocker. This may have been part of the startup issue, but probably makes no difference if the system boots.

Thanks again Fiona! Without your help all data in the windows partition would have been lost.

Next I tried TestDisk 6.14-WIP, but I still have the heads/cylinder mismatches issue. See TestDisk_11.jpg attachment.

Anaysis shows two partitions. One Primary Bootable and on Logical. What happened to System Reserved?
Only the Logical partition has files (using "list files") and is [Data 2] (the second partition on the drive).
The c: boot partition and System Reserved partition are not found. See attached file.

Results of the Deeper Search. Two partitions highlited green, but the last partition, [Data2], only has an OK structure of D=Deleted.

Am I back to the initial issue, wrong CHS values?

Attempting to write partition data results in the attached screen.

What happens if I attempt to [Rebuild BS]? Can this make recovery more difficult?

Perhaps this DOS tool ntsfinfo might provide helpful information for each drive

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... s/bb897424

just run DOS command .. ntsfinfo x (where x = partition letter)

[Later edit]

I run these commands on two ntfs partitions c and d to dump ntsfinfo into a log file

ntsfinfo c > ntsfinfo.log
ntsfinfo d >> ntsfinfo.log (to add to the log file)
