Help needed to recover my files

#1 Post by gordonuk »

Hi everyone,

I need some help recovering some files I have on my external iomega hard drive. It was working fine for many months but then I started experiencing problems with it where it would not be recognised by computer and the file format changed to RAW from NFTS. I have since learned that the problem probably occured because i simply unplugged my external hard drive from the USB port without safely removing it first.

Anyway I need to recover my files on this external hard drive and would be grateful for any assistance as I am a complete newbie with this technical stuff.

What I would like is step by step instructions so that I can find my files on this corrupted external hard drive so that I can copy it onto a new external hard drive.

How would I go about this? Whats the simplest method? Step by step instructions would be useful.

Just a quick point when I have done a quick scan and deeper scan of this external hard drive it did not find any partitions.

Many thanks in advance.

I'd need a screen shot from TestDisk / Analyse or you can copy and paste the content of the testdisk.log in your post.
You'll find the testdisk.log in your testdisk folder.

Hi Fiona,

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I have found the test log but it says it needs to be unzipped and I do not know how to do this. It also says that windows does not recognize the file type.

I am using Windows Vista.

Many thanks.

Normally you'll find it in your testdisk folder?
It's a txt-file and shouldn't be zipped only for uploading purposes.
That's why I' have no idea why it should be unzipped?
Did you unzip testdisk after downloading it?

Would it be possible to upload your testdisk.log, so I can check it?
Immediately after your response, I downloaded testdisk 6.14WIP and tested it.
In my case, it wasn't zipped.
I used the windows version 6.14WIP.
Please let me know, your OS and testdisk version!

Hi Fiona,

I tried to post my log file several times this week but i kept getting an error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 14117158 bytes) in /var/www/html/sites/cgforum/public_html/phpBB3/includes/abm/functions.php on line 1247

I am not sure if this post will be successfully be added but i am using the same Test Disk as you 6.14-WIP and i am also using Windows Vista.

I will also try to upload my Desk Disk log if this post is added successfully.

Many thanks.

Hi Fiona,

When I try uploading the Test Disk log as part of this post it is always unsuccessful. And I have tried this a dozen times. Either the browser (Firefox) crashes or in internet explorer it simply does not upload.

Is there a limit to the file size you can upload to this forum? Because the Test Disk log is quite big because the external hard drive is 1000gb.

Many thanks.
