Portable Harddisk became RAW

#1 Post by kkgorilla »

Hi all, I have this 1TB USB 3.0 external harddisk, running on NTFS (I think) system. I did not partitioned. It became raw recently and has been trying to fix it.

I follow the steps describe in the step to step guide and trying to do the deep search now, and it has been hours and the percentage done still zero.

Is it normal and should I continue? What kind of information should I posted here to illustrate my situation better?

Thank you all!!

Hi I think I should provide more information to help to diagnose the problem:

I started testdisk, after create log this is what I see:
Snap1.JPG
Snap1.JPG (48.58 KiB) Viewed 4209 times
Disk capacity of 1000GB is correct.

Then, it shows:
Snap2.JPG
Snap2.JPG (57.03 KiB) Viewed 4209 times
Funny thing is, when I run this with my laptop (Window Vista) it auto detect it as [Intel], but with my PC (Window 7) it detected [None]. I have not partitioned this disk and [None] should be the correct choice? I have selected [Intel] as what I did with my laptop.

Then I select "Advanced" and I see:
Snap3 - Advance.JPG
Snap3 - Advance.JPG (46.64 KiB) Viewed 4209 times
I don't seems to be able to do anything so I go back to the previous menu and selected "Analyse", and I see again:

can't attached anymore screenshot... to be continue.

...continue

After I select 'Analyse' I see:
Snap4 - Analyse.JPG
Snap4 - Analyse.JPG (62.23 KiB) Viewed 4209 times
and follow by "Quick Search", after that the search jump quickly to 10/121600 as shown:
Snap5 - Quick Search.JPG
Snap5 - Quick Search.JPG (35.45 KiB) Viewed 4209 times
And it seems to take forever to advance from here, is it normal? Normally how long does it take to analyse the whole 1T disk?

Please help to advise if I am going along the right path.

Thanks a lot!

Hi all,

I have read through the forum found some similar situation but not exactly the same. If this has been reviewed and solved, can someone kindly point me to that?

I have not create additional partition for this USB portable harddisk, I started using it right after de-boxing it.

Please help!

Did you use TestDisk-64bit?
You should use 32bit instead, but only in case.
In testdisk disk selection, you shouldn't select the drive but your affected disk.
Is there any reason, why you selected your drive?
Did you use any encryption?

Please let me know.

Hi Fiona, thanks for replying.

I am using two computer to work here, one is my personal laptop running on Vista 32bit and the other is my office pc running on Window 7 64bit. The TestDisk I used is 32bit in both case.
In the disk selection, as you can see from my first attached screenshot, I only get to choose "Drive E:". I did not use any encryption.

Thank you.
