Q to quit doesent go back to Deeper Search results?

#1 Post by jco1971136 »

Hi all
I have been trying for several days to recover a partition on a Compaq Presario C500, but there seems to be something wrong with the program. I go through the steps to recover the partition. After the Deeper Search shows its results, I choose the main partition and hit enter. It shows a message (cant remember what it is), however when I hit the Q key to return to the results of the Deeper Search, the program takes me back to the "Analyze" screen and I have to do a full scan again. I am using the file inside the GParted Live CD. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it.

Thanks in advance for any help provided

Jim

Q is for Quit, not for Back or Return...

I see...

The tutorial @ http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk ... titions.3F, says
Highlight this partition and press p to list your files (to go back to the previous display, press q to Quit).

How do I get back to the Deeper Search results, I have tried Q and Esc., both go back to
"Analyze".

Thanks
Jim

Yes ... dear Admin:)
the program is awesome but some consistency would be great or clear explanation for dummies in the tutorial (like me and Jim) who operate on assumptions that there should be consistency in every screen . Even though not had a chance to check this problem of "Q to quit doesn't go back to Deeper Search results?" I am more and more convinced that this is the case

1) when you choose "p" then "q" takes you back a step which is actually mentioned in the step by step guide (rendering the above comment made by admin a bit inconsistent ("Press q for Quit to go back to the previous display" - in tutorial)

2 when press "enter" after choosing partition then if you choose "q" or choose Quit then you in fact go back to the main screen

hopes this saves people some time - also lets hope it will be more clearly explained in the step by step guide ... not all of us are programmers and not all of us speak English as first lang and it seems it can be confusing even for English speaking people. cheers

If you have ended deap results always shoot a screenshot and print out. nobody can remember what is shown.
then if you hiot the wrong button and land on analyze just do a quick search again then-the second time after deap search was already done the results will pop up much quicker, almost instantly. then you can do your work the right way.

if you cannot see "P", just go forward, highlight a different partition where "p" is shown and dont quit.
backup these files. dont try to repair beforehand.
if some files cannot be recovered try with knoppix live dvd. i could recover a large amount of videodata(50gb of 80gb in total) where testdisk totally failed.
backup-instructions should be reviewed, must be much more precise.

Hello.

I am also having this problem.

When it is a partition that have files and can be recovered, "q" return to the previous screen (the list of all partitions). OK!

But when I enter in a particion (pressing "p") that can't be recovered (this screen: http://i.imgur.com/RDUEkVZ.png), there is no option otherwise "q" and this option leave at the "Analize" screen again! (I really tried to press everything on the keyboard...)

What should I do when enter in a partition that can't be repaired and want to just list all the partitions again?

Thank you.

@ sebastiank
But when I enter in a particion (pressing "p") that can't be recovered
Partition which can't be recovered is a message only!
Reason is often, that a partition ends after disk limit.
So there is no possibility to list any files.
Only on results, you can select a partition and press p to list your files.
In some cases, I've had a trick to make partitions which ends after disk limit available.
Can you upload a snapshot with your message?
So I'd be able to judge, would it be worth to increase the values to make it available or not?

@ jco1971136

I've downloaded the latest version and tested it.
But it wasn't possible to recreate your problem?
Example:
ListFilesDeeperSearch.png
ListFilesDeeperSearch.png (113.35 KiB) Viewed 5371 times
After pressing q für quit, TestDisk jumped back to the result of Deeper Search:
FoundPartitionsDeeperSearch.png
FoundPartitionsDeeperSearch.png (114.72 KiB) Viewed 5371 times
I have tried Q and Esc., both go back to
"Analyze".
Did you try it on capital letters like Q?
Can you try to use q only?
