USB Disk - system file RAW, disk seems too small

#1 Post by Lui92 »

Hi guys :)

I know that was similiar problems on this forum, but I wasn't sure if these solution will be helpful for me, and I don't want to lose my files, so I decided to create new topic and asked you for help :)

I'm new here and I have problem with my USB hard drive... I don't know how it happens, but I can't get into this disk... I mean I can see him in "My Computer", but it's unable to read this :( In Windows Disk Management, this disk I seeing in RAW file system. So I googled and try to do sthing with this, and I found information to use TestDisk. And I did it. I choose Analyse, and I change * to P, because I read to do this on one forum (after that I get to know it was mistake)... Than I could see the list/tree of files and it was right. After this I click enter and choose Write, next Y to accept and reboot. Unfortunately it doesn't help... What's more I tried to do it again, but then I have message: "No partition is bootable"... So in previous forum which I mention, they said me how to repair this: Choose disk -> Analyse -> Quick Search -> Change partition to active (*) -> Write. And I did it, but again, it didn't help to read the disk.
So I tried again doing almost exactly the same, but this time I choose Deep Search, and I get this message:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/xigt.png/

And now I need your help, because I would like to get back my files from the disk... I don't want to recover files, but all partition with files, because only 15GB on this disk was space free...

I have Windows 7 and before RAW it was NTFS :) Plz guys! Help me!

PS. Sorry for my bad english, but I hope you were able to understand all of this :P

Here I put for you log from last scanning:

Did you use testdisk 64 bit?
In case, can you repeat your diagnose using the 32 bit version?
In disk selection you should select disk instead of drive!

Your displayed partition is only a found partition beyond your disk limit.
It's just as far outside, so that it's not possible that this partition can contain any data?
Also it, has no significance, because testdisk can find partition on the basis of remnants.
Important are alway the results and what's recoverable.

Please let me know, did you use the 64bit-version and did yourepeat your diagnose?
Uploading the log is appreciated.

Hi :)

Thanks for so fast resposne :)
Yes I used testdisk 64 bit, and at the 1st time I choose drive, but next two was with selecting disk, as I remember...
About data... I'm not sure if I understand, but before this accident I have on disk a lot of data - about 570GB used.

Ok of course, I can use now 32 bit version. As I understand, you want from me, to do the Analyse and put here logs.
But could you tell me what exactly should I selecting step by step? I don't want to do this wrong again ;/

You can't do so,mething wrong!
Please repeat your diagnose running the 32 bit version and Quick and if no partition is found Deeper Search also!
As long as you don't use Write, your not going to change anything to your disk!
TestDisk 64bit it's only intended to run pur 64bit machines like Itanium, where are no 32bit-emulation like WOW64 (windows on windows) is available, because some features are not available.
In testdisk folder, can you open the testdisk.log (using a word processor like wordpad?) and copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log into your next post?
If your partition is found you can mark it and press p to have a try to list your files.
Please let me know.

But as I wrote, in first two times I used Write and then nothing happen... And as you can see, I put in my 1st post a log from the last scanning :) Now I will do the same, when I scan the disk in testdisk 32 bit version :)

Would it be possible that your partition was still in your partition table available and have you had a problem with your boot sector?
Otherwise if Write doesn't work it might be necessary to disable antivirus and any backgroundprocess, which prevents testdisk to write your partition to your partition table.
You can use msconfig, to switch off all backgroundprocesses.
But before I can judge it, I'd need more info!

Re: USB Disk - system file RAW, disk seems too small

Ok so maybe let's try this. This happened about week ago, during switching connection between two computers. And I didn't remove disk properly, I mean I didn't use: "safely remove devices from your computer". And when I connect this disk into another computer I can't read him. I connect him to my computer and get to know that I its RAW system files now and Windows doesn't read this. So with my disk everything was alright before this...

Answering your question - I have no idea! I think that answer is YES - its possible that my partition was still in my partition table, because after Analyse, program found partition, look here (it was before attepmt with message about "disk seems too small"):
1. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/801/33yb.png/
2. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/96/69vx.png/

And then I tried to Write, but as I said it doesn't work... So then I try again and get this message about small disk.

But what with boot sector I have no idea... I mention that I tried to repair my disk with TestDisk about 2-3 times. And at 2nd time I change from Active partition (*) to Primary (P)... With first two attempts I could list my files by pressing p. After 3rd attempt with the same message in the topic, I didn't do nothing more. I'm waiting for your advice :P

According to disable antivirus - maybe the best way is to try Write partition in Window Safe Mode?

I don't know what else I can tell you to give you more info :(

I didn't scan the disk with 32 bit version, yet. So tell me now what should I do... Do the scan? Do the scan and write? Maybe repair boot sector (if the answer is yes, how should I do this?)?

I'm waiting for your answer with information what to do and I will do it :P

P.S. Thanks again for trying to help me :) I appreciate it!

Hi :)

I decided to try do something with this problem and I have new infromation:
  • 1. I was able to copy some files. So files are still on disk. I can't copy all files, because I don't have so much free space. So I would like to recover my disk with all files :P
    2. I think that with boot sector is everything alright (see the log).
    3. The only problem is that, I can't recover my files :( I mean when I tried 'Write' it doesn't help. I didn't do the Deeper Search because TestDisk found my partition and the disk have only one partition.
Here is the log file, which contain, I hope, more information for you, because I check in almost all options :P But I didn't change anything ;)
Log file:

Code: Select all
