Partition Type Selection

Note: I searched the forum and read the Wiki documentation and the PDF. But my question uses terms that generate hundreds of useless results and the documentation did not clarify.
I don't understand which should be selected: the partition type it is currently (i.e. as it's currently detected by an OS) or the type it's supposed to be during TestDisk setup. The latter would seem the obvious choice, but my disc is being auto-detected by the software as non-partitioned.

In Testdisk you should select the partition table type as it has been before your problems occured.

Thank you for the response! I ultimately got my partition back, and had no other issues understanding the software or its documentation.
However, this one aspect of the docu. is lacking: it simply says, "Select
the partition table type".

Without further explanation, I cannot be the only one who's confused by whether to use the previous or current type.
I assumed previous since the current status would seem easily identifiable, but my confusion was exacerbated by the fact that it auto-detected no partition at all, while Windows Disk Management and GParted were seeing a 1MB FAT partition on a 500GB volume.
I'd clarify the documentation myself if this were an editable wiki, but alas…

Partition table type selection
------------------------------
TestDisk displays the partition table types.
* Select the partition table type - usually the default value is the correct one as TestDisk auto-detects the partition table type.
If you have reason to believe that the current type of partition table detected may have been changed in error please select the type that was in use when your disc was running properly.
Would an additional sentence in Testdisk.pdf as printed in bold letters above help in selecting the right choice?
If not, how would you write it?

I think that should be more than enough explanation for most users. Thanks for the responsiveness!!
