Recover data from old HDD

#1 Post by Intercore »

Hello everyone.
Didn't find the topic with this specific problem so created a new one.

I connected my old HDD via SATA to USB adadpter to my laptop. Windows can't access this drive because it says it's a dynamic disk (invalid). I tried TestDisk to attempt recover my very needed files but the only option I can select after analysing step is "Image Creation". Analysis shows that there are two invalid FAT boot sectors, no bootable partition. I'm newbie there so I don't know if it's complicated or not, sorry... :D What can I do to recover my files so I can access them?

BTW, I tried connecting this HDD in Linux Mint, and it showed up and mounted. I could access some folders but not everything because of "unknown error".

This is analysis results:

Disk /dev/sdb - 500 GB / 465 GiB - CHS 60801 255 63 The harddisk (500 GB / 465 GiB) seems too small! (< 4465 GB / 4159 GiB) Check the harddisk size: HD jumper settings, BIOS detection... The following partitions can't be recovered: Partition Start End Size in sectors > FAT32 LBA 90150 131 29 195973 114 46 1700045442 FAT12 276639 34 25 542947 240 35 4278251009

Which hard disk?
The Seagate 500 GB one I used in my PC for about 8 years with no problems (CrystalDiskInfo shows that everything's alright with it). But the motherboard died so I wanted to recover all my files from that disk to my laptop but unfortunately I couldn't do that because Windows can't access it.

There are many harddisks from Seagate. Especially when you include old models. Which information am I looking for?

I connected my old HDD via SATA to USB adadpter to my laptop.
What kind of connection is that?
Where does the power come from?

A docking station or an externally powered case with a USB or eSata connector would be nice.

Even though I don't understand every attribute I would recommend you duplicating the drive using ddrescue as described in the manual.
