1TB drive suddenly detected as 16kb, other partitions missing.

#1 Post by carlman14 »

Hello, I'm having trouble fixing a drive that suddenly had all it's partitions disappear. Yesterday, I put my computer to sleep like I usually do. When I woke it back up... black screen. I could not get it to boot for anything. I booted into linux to inspect the drive with testdisk. The ssd is being detected as 16kb unallocated space instead of 1000 GB. Likewise in gparted, it says the drive is composed of 1 partition of 16kb of unallocated space. The other partitions for the rest of the terabyte of storage do not show.

Situation and symptoms:
- Drive is windows 10 boot drive.
- Drive is 1 terabyte.
- Drive is being detected as 16kb instead of 1000 GB.
- Drive does not show up in linux directory structure, but does show up in gparted/testdisk.

What I've tried in testdisk:
- Chose all of the partition table types, then analyze. No partitions were found on any of them, even with a deeper search.
- Chose "none" partition type, then selected "NTFS" for type, then list files. That produced an error as well.
- Basically, it seems that no matter what options I select before analyze, I end up with this error when trying to search (and deeper search): "No partition found or selected for recovery".
- When selecting "advanced", I see "No partitions available" every time.

I wasn't sure how to attach pictures, so all the screens for what I tried are here: https://imgur.com/a/yMiLmck

Thanks for any help.

Hmm, the link must be filtered out of the post. I found the attachments tab. Here's some pictures.

Drive detected as 16kb:

Intel partition table -> analyze:

I end up here after search no matter what options I choose:
NoPartitionFound.png
NoPartitionFound.png (7.99 KiB) Viewed 2165 times

So you think there's no hope here? Honestly I don't care if I can't recover the files off the drive. Would it be possible to just recover the partitions, even if it wipes them?

If you don't believe me post the Testdisk log file.

I believe you. The log file says the same thing that testdisk says. Thanks for looking and responding!
