Can the retry count for sector read operations be changed?

Ubuntu has gotten very slow. Is there anyway to tell it not to try to read a sector if its bad more than a few times? It takes days to weed thru a drive with 7000 bad sectors
. With 4 trys a sector an IBM with 640k running at 10mhz could do it in 20 minutes
but Ubuntu 20
takes days on a 3ghz with 3 gbyte ram.
