Lost Partitions (No endmark 0xAA55) and Photorec Finds Nothing

#1 Post by databoy2k »

Hey All:

I'd love some tips on where to go from here. My drive is a fairly new Seagate 1tb drive, but for whatever reason it has completely lost its way. The drive has a number of music files, legally purchased from back when that was a thing, and some jpeg images of album art. I can't remember if the drive was formatted NTFS or ext3, but I'm fairly sure that it was all one partition.

I did both a quick and deep search with testdisk, and even tried to "force" a partition onto the drive; I can't seem to get partitions to stick. Then I ran Photorec on the default settings on the drive and nothing was recovered.

Testdisk.log (truncated to remove irrelevant drives):

You messed up your drive by trying to change partition types and writing artificial partitions instead of doing a standard search procedure that is described on this site and is reflects in hundreds of support cases in this forum.

I have no idea what to do now.

Thanks for the look. Unfortunately, this is how the drive started. First thing I did was the Quick-Search / Deep Search method. I assume that the log shows that. When neither even turned up a single partition, I tried to add partitions by guessing.

Is that maybe the right route to go down? Use Testdisk to write an MBR and then create a partition at sector 2048? That's where the other drives that I've recovered always started their partitions.

Is your drive an external or an internal one - maybe removed from its housing?

Check your drive's health:

I don't see typical errors.

I can't judge the figures for raw read error rate and seek error rate.
Your load cycle rate after one year of operation appears to high for me. The drive should run much longer before falling asleep. This is an issue that you research for yourself.

You did not answer my other question.

Sorry; the drive is purely internal. It was bought as an internal drive (never removed from its housing).

Use Testdisk the standard way and provide the log file. Your log file looks kind of unusual and seems only documenting your way of manipulating the disk.
