Understanding the Filesystem

#1 Post by mkear21 »

Hi Members,
I have knowledge gaps and wish for a better understand that would help me better use Testdisk.
In regards to MFT, filenames, folder names, Partition information, file data, Format information, Drive Letter.
Where is all this information stored on the drive and how is it done?
What happens when any of this information is corrupted?
What happens to any of this original information when it is quick formatted?
These are basics I should know, to better determine what has happened to the drive when experiencing data loss and corruption.
I appreciate any references that might be helpful.
Thank you in advance?

The internet is full of free information. Using the search engine of your choice with the keywords "partition table" or "file system" should give you lots of information. When learning about file systems, do not start with NTFS, use simple ones like FAT16 and FAT32.
