Unable to detect harddisk

Hello! I am a Macbook user and I accidentally cleared my external hard drive so I would like to recover the deleted files. I installed TestDisk with no problem and it is able to detect my other hard drives, but not the one that I want to recover my files from. My Macbook / Disk Utility is able to detect the hard drive and I can access the files inside using Finder, so I am not sure why TestDisk is not detecting the hard drive. Would really appreciate any help on this matter - thank you!
