Trying to fix a broken external HD, no clue what to do

#1 Post by chorech »

Hi all,

I'll try to explain step by step what I've done in order to recover data from a damaged HD. The drive is a WD 2tb book. Device manager is still correctly seeing the drive, but I am not always able to see it in my windows explorer. I've managed to copy a few folders from it to my computer, even if super slow.

I've tried to run chkdsk, but I got an error saying the drive was write protected and not accessible. Googling how to fix that, I used diskpart, selected the volume and used the command attributes disk clear readonly. Going back to chkdsk, now I get an error saying that chkdsk isn't available for RAW drives.

Trying my luck with testdisk now, but I'm not really sure what I have to do. I have followed a step-by-step guide and searched for partitions. The scan took hours, and it didn't find anything. I've tried to adventure in some other options but not knowing exactly was I was looking for, I quit the software. Now I am doing another partitions search.

I tried searching for similar cases but I didn't find anything. If any other similar issue was solved please point me to that!

Any help on what to do next will be really appreciated.

How did you copy folders when the disk was not visible in Windows explorer?

How did you connect your WD 2TB book to your computer?
Did you leave it in its enclosure?
