photorec will just stop at the same spot

#1 Post by fileman »

When trying to recover txt and tx? from "whole" the tool will run normally at first but then always stop/Freeze at the spot. Anything i can do about that?

This is how it looks like when getting stuck:

Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive0 - 256 GB / 238 GiB (RO) - Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series
Partition Start End Size in sectors
3 P MS Data 239616 499041147 498801532 [Basic data partition]
Destination /cygdrive/d/recover/recup_dir

Pass 1 - Reading sector 300765752/498801532, 233447 files found
Elapsed time 0h08m29s - Estimated time to completion 0h05m35
tx?: 127476 recovered
txt: 105971 recovered Stop

Your source device may be broken.
Post your smartmontools log file using the attachment tab on the bottom of the page.
The log file may suggest that you should duplicate your disk using ddrescue as described in the manual.

What exactly do you need from smartmontools? There are a lot of atributes that can be run. So i did the the smart health check and checked for reallocated sector count (which the Testdrive-Manual suggests) which seems to look okay (i attached the Results)? Any specific thing you need?
I also ran a selftest, but it didn't show any issues neither and only printed out that it completed without errors.

However good news is: After a reboot Photorec just worked fine and finished the recovery process and therfore i wa able to recover the deleted file. Maybe something was "blocking" access before the reboot, since this is my Systemdrive? I didn't have any issue with the drive before and only wanted to use photorec to recover some file i accidently deleted.

Sorry i don't want to annoy you but i'm feeling really stupid now. Wrong drive? I'll post 2 screenshots of how i used Photorec: On first Screenshot you'll see my Harddrives, i selected the 840 Pro there, Second Screenshot shows the Partitions on it.. I wanted to recover files of the 3rd Parition (which didn't work yesterday).
So i used smartmontools and scanned the 840 Pro drive. I did it just now again with the same results. What am i doing wrong here?

I was wrong and had the other open posting in mind.
Which version of Photorec are you using?
How long did you wait after assuming that Photorec was stuck?

I'm using the one included in the Testdisk7.2.WIP package. I waited for about 20-30 Minutes. This morning when i tried it it instantly worked and it didn't even stop at any point. So i guess it was all just related to me not restarting the system before.
