Recovery of MTS files on external HDD

Hi everyone!
I'd like to know if it's possible to recover MTS files with photorec?
I used it to recover JPG on a encrypted HDD (damned ransomware :'(
But in file format i only see m2ts.. is it the same?

I don't know! The internet sources I checked did not answer this question. Some claim the two being identical except for mts files that have to comply with the old 8 + 3 letter file format.
The source code of Photorec did not mention the "mts" format.
Therefore I downloaded a sample from

The zip file contain a file named "mts.mts".
I put it onto a USB pen drive where I deleted it using SHIFT DEL.
I ran the most recent version of Photorec and Photorec succeeded in finding it.
If you have still access to the video camera that generated the mts file you can use this camera to create a short video that you put onto a drive. Have Photorec examine the drive to get a personal proof that your mts file can be recovered.
Sorry for the indirect answer! But you can always apply this strategy to verify that Photorec is indeed recovering a certain file type.
