Geometry woes

Hi there -

I've an external (via USB) Hitachi 3TB 7K3000 that had been humming along on my iMac (currently running mountain lion) when all went south (I suppose most people don't come here to talk about how great their drives are working!)

The testdisk log results are below. I'll note that there were a couple of errors on the screen that didn't make it into the log; they followed a line that did (the check_FAT one):

check_FAT: Unusual media descriptor (0xf0!=0xf8)
Warning: number of heads/cylinder mismatches 16 (FAT) != 1 (HD)
Warning: number of sectors per track mismatches 32 (FAT) != 1 (HD)

Basically the disk is being seen by various programs (including testdisk) as 746GB, while it's actually a 3TB drive. The partitions seem to be ok inside the disk, but too large for what the system sees as the disk.

Hitachi claims the disk looks like this:

Any hints, RTFMs, or whatever would be greatly appreciated. I have searched around a fair bit but haven't seen the answer to my particular predicament, but I'd love to be shown the way.


(I did hit stop after awhile, the 00% progress meter wasn't moving at all, but I can rerun, do other tests, etc., etc.)

The first thing to do, might be to get your disk capacity back.
Currently your partition ends after disk limit.
A possibility might be hdat2.
Like in these examples;

Setting back disk limit accesses the firmware of your disk.
In this case its recommended to connect your disk internally.
