Hi, I need technical support to understand if I can solve a problem with my DAS unit that is no longer recognized by Windows 10.

DAS Yottamaster
Yottamaster Y-Pioneer 5 Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure
Raid Type-C EU
RAID 5 - 5 Disks 8TB.

This DAS is made up of 5 8TB disks in RAID 5 with a capacity of 29808 GB. Currently, just over half is used.

As soon as I finish transferring all the data to the drive, I start making a backup copy on a NAS. I managed to copy a third of the data before the problem.

The data inside the DAS is my audio collection, around 150,000 lossless albums also in HD and DSD organized over many years of listening.

An error occurred while backing up one of the folders.
Once the DAS has restarted, the Windows message to format the disk appears.

I've done:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /f and:
The file system is NTFS.
The first NTFS boot sector is unreadable or damaged.
Alternatively, the second NTFS boot sector will be read.
Unable to determine volume version and status. CHKDSK terminated.

Looking at the Windows "disk management" it appears:
E: Simple layout, 100% RAW file system Available.

What can I do to rebuild the file system and recover all data using TestDisk?

I run Testdisk 7.2 like amministrator.
Create \ Select the disk\ Proceed
The partition table detected is EFI GPT not INTEL
The first ask is EFI GPT or Intel?
Windows chkdsk say me: The file system is NTFS.

If you mean "repairing" when talking about rebuilding your RAID5 array, repairing is rather the exception than the norm.

You can run Testdisk to see if it finds partitions that TestDisk lets you access (do not start TestDisk now, read this posting until the end!)

If this does not work you can try out Photorec or any commercial software.

I guess you did everything wrong with your setup. The RAID5 organisation forces your drives to run simultaneously. I doubt that the 80 mm fan and those ventilation hole simulation at the back of the enclosure is able to prevent your enclosure from becoming a nice litle heat trap causing excessive wear and failure.
Are the disks sitting in plastic carriers?

Where are you located?
What is your ambient temperature?
Which disks are you using? High power disks runing at 7200 rpm?

I suspected your disks to be dammaged already.
Before using TestDisk you should run smartmontools:

It may very well be that the enclosure does not show the individual disks to your computer but a combined device instead.
Then you might have to connect your disks on by one to your computer directly so that smartmontools can request SMART data.

The most interesting SMART parameter will be the maximum temperature recorded.

If the disks are dammaged the first thing would be to duplicate them one by one.

You have to exclude the possibilty of your disks overheating by monitoring the inner temperatur with a thermometer.

I live in Italy, the ambient temperature is 19°C, the disks are 3 NAS type disks and 2 normal ones. From the yottamaster application the raid and disks seem ok (how can I insert an image?).

I need to restore the disk (DAS) because I only need the data if I can recover it in the same structure of folders and subfolders that already exist. I don't need a list of songs that I then have to organize by genre, group, album, etc.

I questioned you about the speed because high rpm disks consume more energy and run hotter.

Use the attachment tab in the left corner of the bottom of the screen.

Given this requirement only Testdisk might help you. But you should verify your SMART parameters first. Your try failed.

Either Yottamaster tells you how to adress each individual disk with your RAID array being physically unchanged or you have to physically put the disks of the array one by one into a separate environment. Being connected directly to a computer using a SATA or USB-connection you should be able to receive five different reports, one for each disk.

If you run Testdisk and you can't find any partition whose content is accessible and ressembles your data your remaining options are using other recovery software or contacting a professional recovery company.
