Hi, I hope my question is straightforward. I deleted my 212 GB Linux partition. I want to write the recovered files to a (250GB) external drive. I can't tell how to locate and designate the drive. In linux, the options are /media/usb through ../usb7 but none of these seem to be right. I have run photorec choosing usb and also usb0 but although photorec recovers files they don't show up. I made a folder on the external which also doesn't show up in any of these directories. I have also run photorec from my windows partition. see attached.

You can find your disk using the arrow keys in your keyboard. The left arrow key will help to go through your disks.
If you run Photorec from Linux you can use: fdisk -l to list and identify your disks.
In Linux they most likely be shown as : dev/sda, dev/sdb and so forth. You will be shown also their capacity and an identifier so you can recognize which one is which. But the pictures you uploaded are from a Windows machine (probably 7).
If you have not done so, try running PhotoRec as the administrator. Right hand click on the PhotoRec executable and choose Run as the Administrator from the options.

Best of luck

Thanks for replying.

I did get those screens from windows. I also ran photorec from a Rescue Remix CD. The HD did show up when I used a Gparted CD under /dev/sdb but under Rescue Remic Photorec doesn't let me write there--I am not able to select it. I will send screenshots running Windows Photorec as administrator. Thanks again.

Now that you are running PhotoRec as the administrator, you should try to get to your external disk (the one you already prepared) and choose where to copy your files. Try using the left arrow key to get there. If that fails you could try using the number 4 key in your numeric key pad (it is also a left arrow key). Might be this time Windows will allow you to write to the disk. If you find that all this is no good, you could try running PhotoRec from a Linux live CD. Parted Magic, Fedora (security spin), Knoppix are all good choices. Run the programme as root.

Best of luck.
