TestDisk damaged my Disk
Dear all here,
My Disk was fine no thing wrong with it, i needed to move it to another computer.
it appears as (invalid dynamic) .. so i tried your solution here
http://mypkb.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/h ... sic-disks/
i did exactly step by step.. i rebooted my computer after "make the dynamic to basic drive conversion happen"
but unfortuntley my Disk appears like that
http://i57.tinypic.com/2zsb1ua.jpg
SO PLEASE I WANT YOUR HELP TO RESTORE MY DISK STRUCTURE AS IT WAS.
i did that step as says (It displays the current structure. Select Backup first, then Proceed. Backing up first is a good idea if you later want to restore the drive’s partition structure)
PLEASE I WANT TO RESTORE MY DISK TO BE RIGHT AS IT WAS BEFORE.
Help !

Re: TestDisk damaged my Disk
Testdisk doesn't touch your file system and data.
TestDisk only recovers partitions and will never touch data nor underlying data.
Please don't write or change anything to your disk.
Dynamic disks don't use an intel partition table this way like a normal MBR disks do!
Restore of a backup of your partition table works if you're running Quick Search and stop it pressing enter.
Pressing L for load and confirming, you'll get back to your previous situation.
But you shouldn't do it now.
Do you still have your testdisk.log before your current situation occured?
Please run TestDisk Analyse and Quick Search!
Stop testdisk and use quit to close it.
Copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log into your next post!

Re: TestDisk damaged my Disk
Please run Deeper Search.
Might be possible that Deeper Search finds more partitions, mark them and press p to list your data.
Please post your testdisk.log again.

Re: TestDisk damaged my Disk
Thanks for your info.
As far as I've seen your disk was created as a dynamic disk.
Dynamic disks, created from the scratch, differ to accidentally converted disks.
The difference mentionned above is, an Intel MBR disk can only contain up to 4 primary partitions or 3 primary and 1 extended partition for logical partitions/volumes.
An extended partition needs a little bit space to be created.
If a dynamic disk is created from the scratch, there is no space left to create an extended partition.
That's why in your case you can recover up to 4 partitions.
But your disk contain 5 partition.
I'd like to show you an example:
Your results:
Your FAT32-Partition will be ignored because is not necessary.
Red marked values on the left side are displaying the start sector of a partition.
Red marked values at the right side displaying the end sector of a partition.
For example, the first partition ends at sector 19 and your second partition starts at sector 20.
That's why, there is no space for an extended partition.
It easily means, you're only able to recover up to 4 primary partitions.
If you'd only recover 3 partitions, you'll get unallocated space to create an extended partition.
But it's not a big problem, because testdisk offers you a solution to copy files from partitions as a backup.
My suggestion is not to recover 5 partitions but 3.
After partition recovery of 3 partitions, you can create an extended partition and create 2 logical partitions (if you'd like you can also create 1 logical partition) and copy your data back!
Recovery procedure may look like:
Copy your data of the last two partitions to another healthy disk/partition/ folder.
Standard folder to copy data to, is your testdisk folder.
If you list your data of your fourth/fifth partition and pressing a will mark all data for copying. marking that two dots in the upper area of your testdisk display and pressing enter, you'll get one directory up until you'll get to your disk selection.
You can select another disk, partition to copy your data to.
If you'd like to copy data into a specific folder as a destination you can mark any appropriate folder and enter it, using the right arrow on you keyboard.
After backing up your data of the last two partitions, you can recover three partitions.
Procedur will look like:
* HPFS - NTFS 0 32 33 12 223 19 204800
NTFS, blocksize=4096, 104 MB / 100 MiB
P HPFS - NTFS 12 223 20 12748 86 10 204595200
NTFS, blocksize=4096, 104 GB / 97 GiB
P HPFS - NTFS 12748 86 11 50992 247 7 614400000
NTFS, blocksize=4096, 314 GB / 292 GiB
If you mark a partition, you can set the status of a partition as primary activ (it's a star *) and P for primary only not bootable using the left or right arrow key on your keyboard.
You can watch it at the right side.
Please set all 3 partitions for recovery as mentionned above!
Don't forget to copy/backup your data of the last two partitions first.
Press enter and confirm at WRITE.
If there should be a problem about any boot sector, you'll receive a message to repair it.
Confirm at BackupBS to copy the backup of your boot over your boot secor.
Your boot sector will be repaired.
Finish TestDisk using Quit and restart your PC.
Now you can create an extended partition on your unallocated space and create locical partitions to copy your data back.
This procedure changed your dynamic disk to a basic disk.
At the beginning you have a windows boot partition.
Deleting it, causes unallocated space and looks somehow strange.
But if you'd like to go another way to recover your data, please let me know.

Re: TestDisk damaged my Disk
In fact i dont know how to thank you for your kindness & help.
i would say that: what is important -for me- in that Disk is only 3 partitions, the last 3 partitions
that one
and that
and the last
So.. could i recover that 3 partition directly? so i don't need any copy or data backup? and after that i find my Data ?
my steps is:
1- Mark the 3 partitions for recovery ..and set the partitions as primary not bootable (press p).
2- press enter @ (write)
while that
3- if there is any sector problem a messege will appear to repair .. then confirm to copy the backup over boot sector
quit & restart
so i will get a basic Disk of 3 partitions with it's Data.
i'm not using that Disk for boot Windows, just wanna to keep these Data in it.
that is what i learnt from you my dear.
tell me Ok to start doing that.
Best Regards

Re: TestDisk damaged my Disk
It could be necessary that you have to set your first and second partition to D for deleted.
Works the same way like setting partitions up as primary.
Otherwise testdisk will try to add them to your partition table too.
Set your last three partitions to P for primary (If not already automatically done)) and write them into your partition table using Write.
Only in case if you get a message that a boot sector should be repaired, confirm at Backup BS.
But only in case!
Quit testdisk and restart!
