Deeper Search: Disc too small error

#1 Postby lorchel » 23 Apr 2012, 20:16

Dear all,

I googled a lot and searched this forum, but I couldn't find a solution to restore my home partition folder structures.
Before trouble started my hard disk had the following partitions:

Code: Select all

P windows, ntfs, with label windoof
Extended partition consisting of
L lubuntu root, ext4, no label
L home, ext4, label home
L swap
L fat32, label fat

I suceeded in destroying all the data on my home and root partition with the following actions:
I created an usb multiboot system with the help of the multisystem software. Two of the installed images were Dr. Web Antivirus and Parted Magic. When booting the Dr. Web Antivirus Image I encountered some error messages. After that the laptop didn't boot anymore from hd, because all the data of the lubuntu root partition were gone and grub could not be found. After reinstalling Lubuntu, everything was fine again, the home data was still ok and the story could have ended here.
But I added a new logical partition behind the fat32 partition with ext4, label grub2 and installed grub additionally on that partition. Later I booted the Dr. Web image again - with similar results. Finally I could not find any data on the root, home and grub2 partitions. The windows partition is still ok.

Now I started using the parted magic image from the usb stick, and used the testdisk and photorec tools. Photorec worked like a charm on the home partition. Now I try too recover the data of the home partition with testdisk to get back the folder structure too.

The results of the quick search look promising. But when I look at the existing files on e.g. the home partition I only find deleted folders (guest, tom, lost+found) and these are empty:

Code: Select all

P Linux                 4569   1  1 60016 254 62  890772056 [home]
Directory /tom

No file found, filesystem may be damaged.

The advanced search found a lot of different home partitions some extending behind the end of the 500GB hd suggesting that it should be as large as 1023GB:

Code: Select all

The harddisk (500 GB / 465 GiB) seems too small! (< 1023 GB / 953 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partitions can't be recovered:
Partition               Start        End    Size in sectors
>  Linux                 7205 171  7 62653 170  5  890772056 [home]
   Linux                 7207 213 47 62655 212 45  890772056 [home]
   Linux                 7211  71 29 62659  70 27  890772056 [home]
   FAT16 <32M           20783  87 39 124469 203 58 1665722918

I end with

Code: Select all

Disk /dev/sda - 500 GB / 465 GiB - CHS 60802 255 63
Partition               Start        End    Size in sectors
 D HPFS - NTFS              0   1  1  2609 254 53   41929577 [windoof]
 D HPFS - NTFS              0   1 11  2609 254 63   41929577
 D Linux                 2611   0  1  4568 254 57   31455264 [root]
 D Linux                 2611   1  1  4437 253 58   29350624
>* Linux                 4569   1  1 60016 254 62  890772056 [home]
 P Linux Swap           60017   1  1 60669 254 41   10490360
 P FAT32 LBA            60670   1  1 60788  79 27    1900611 [fat]
 D Linux                60788 111 58 60800 237 43     200704 [grub2]
 D Linux                60788 111 60 60800 237 45     200704 [grub2]

Structure: Ok.  Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:
*=Primary bootable  P=Primary  L=Logical  E=Extended  D=Deleted
Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type, P: list files,
     Enter: to continue
EXT4 Large file Sparse superblock, 456 GB / 424 GiB

and dont know what I could try next. The displayed home partition still shows the deleted, empty folders tom, guest and lost+found.

Any help, comments and tips are highly appreciated. :)

Greets, Tom

Thanks, Tom
