TestDisk stuck copying a particular file

Hope this is the correct forum for this. The issue is file recovery but it is with TestDisk not PhotoRec.

I have a WD 320GB hard drive whose C partition (~100GB) is no longer bootable. I took it out of the computer it was in, placed it in a USB hard drive enclosure and tried to perform check disk on it but Windows said it was not accessible. It does show up as a healthy RAW partition in disk management.

However, TestDisk 7.0 can see the partition and I started it copying all files to another USB drive around 10:00AM EST on Nov 29 - so it has been running for a while. After successfully copying about 46 GB of data, sometime yesterday (Nov 30) it got stuck on one file. Here's a screen shot of where it is now:

The number, 351770 keeps going up but the file TestDisk is trying to copy never finishes.

Nothing seems to have been written to the log in quite some time.

The drive from which I am trying to copy data is designated /dev/sdi in the log. The partition is the primary (P) "HPFS - NTFS" partition. The file it is stuck on is buried in the downloads directory.

Any hope this thing will break out of this infinite loop? Or should I just kill the process and start again trying to pick just the files it has not already gotten (skipping the one it is stuck on of course :=)).

There are bad sectors. You should clone the disk first using gnu ddrescue to a new empty disk

Once the copy is done, remove the original disk and use TestDisk on the clone.

Well, at 9:44 PM EST on 12/1 it completed copying that file, apparently successfully, after about 30 hours of processing it. It has continued and copied an additional 9.4 GB of data as of 9:00 AM EST on 12/2 for a total of 56 GB since 10:00AM EST 11/29.

So, since 1) TestDisk did finally get past that file, 2) TestDisk copying files isn't hurting the performance of my computer, 3) I'd have to purchase another hard drive to clone my bad drive, 4) I'd have to spend time setting up for the cloning, and 5) I'm quite busy today, I'm going to just let it continue and see how far it gets and how long it takes.

But if the copying finally does fail (or I get a power failure that aborts it or something else happens that requires a reboot), then I will try the cloning.

TestDisk completed copying all the files (61.1 GB) at 3:28PM EST on Dec 2 with no errors reported. So it took 77.25 hours with 30 hours devoted to one file of a little less than 1 GB.

Then I turned my attention to another partition on the disk. Windows recognized it and Explorer correctly showed the directories in it but, when I tried to copy them, Windows complained of errors and offered to reformat the drive. So I tried TestDisk again and it copied everything (28GB) in under 7 hours - I started it about 10:00PM last night and it was done when I checked it about 5:00AM this morning.

So it seems like how long it takes TestDisk to copy files depends on how bad a shape they are in. The RAW partition was in worse shape than the recognizable NTFS partition and in particular the file it stuck on was in really bad shape and took a lot to reconstruct it. Or is there a better explanation of the time it took?

Anyway, I've got all my data so I'm happy
