recovering files on my external drive

I have an external harddrive that I havent used for a while. Now when I connect it it says I have to format it. Before that I would like to recover the files that are still on it. I found the software test disk but I cant figure out how I can recover my files.
When I use photorec and choose the disk I get this:

Run TestDisk, select the PhysicalDisk that contains G:, Advanced, select the partition, Boot, RebuildBS, List. If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit and restart your computer.
If it doesn't work, you can use PhotoRec but it will not recover the original filenames.

do I have to repair FAT?

In Advanced, choose type to force the partition to FAT32 LBA, Boot, RebuildBS, List. If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm Quit.
If your partition was exFAT or NTFS, choose the partition type 7 instead.

which partition table type is for FAT32
and in case its NFTS, option 7 is xbox??
