Disk Geometry?

Hello.

How does changing the Disk Geometry work?

I was using Windows 7. I have some internal HDD's that I used testdisk and photorec with. They are old IDE drives and disconnect with the USB3 device while I accessed them. Photorec finished each pass (I tried every option) even when the HDD's disconnected by themselves from device manager or My Computer.

Testdisk said the Disk Geometry is incorrect. It is NTFS. FAT16 from Windows 95, 98 and Windows ME.

How can I tell what the Disk Geometry is? I have read that it is different for each type of formatted file system, each HDD brand, each HDD type from each manufacturer, each HDD size, where the HDD's were made, etc. Will a manufacturer give the information out?

What happens if the Disk Geometry is incorrectly changed? Can it be reverted? Can a testdisk search find the lost partitions with a Disk Geometry change, or multiple changes?

Thank you.
