After recovery I end up with a huge .gz file?

Hello,
I used photorec to try and recover some .r3d (RED one camera) files, I accidentally deleted. After the recovery I ended up with recup_dir.1, 2,and 3. In recup_dir.1 there is a .gz file that is 40 gigs, I am hoping that within it contains my recovered files, however, I can't open it.
When I try to open it, I get "unable to unarchive "file name" into "recup_dir.1".
(error 2_ no usch file or directory).
Are my recouped files in there and how may I unarchive it?
I'm on a mac, running snow leopard, any help is greatly appreciated.
