Hi y'all, running Ubuntun12.04. Had a system lock-up, soft reboot didn't work, did a hard reboot.
Grub loaded fine, but selected partition won't boot, "Error: hd0 out of disk.", booted into initramfs. Restarted from recovery disk, ran testdisk 6.13, which doesn't see /dev/sda at all (ext4), but it shows up in Ubuntu's Disk Utility as unformatted (actually contains 2 partitions.)

I -suspect- it's due to testdisk not supporting ext4 fs - any ideas?

TestDisk supports ext4.
Might be better to use testdisk 6.14WIP.
Only if it's possible.
Can you copy and paste the content of the testdisk.log?
Need infos at least from analyse and Quick Search to check your geometry etc.. first.

Good to know about ext4. My version says it works with "Linux Ext2 and Ext3", but it successfully reports on my other drives. (I haven't grabbed 6.14 WIP yet.) Here's the error msg from testdisk.log:
Warning: can't get size for Disk /dev/sda - 0 B - CHS 1 255 63, sector size=512 - ATA ST3500418AS
plus a later warning after the other disks info (all theirs is accurate):
Warning: can't get size for Disk /dev/mapper/control - 0 B - CHS 1 1 1, sector size=512
