Here is an update, everything in this post was performed on the ddrescue image clone of the hard disk.


I tried fsck:
$ sudo fsck.vfat -n -f mybook.img

This is an update:

I used ddrescue to clone the disk to another drive as an image file, it only has been one pass. Since it was the first pass I didn't use the -r option. There were zero errors.

Just to be cautious a few questions before moving on:

I appreciate the help so far, it will take me a while to try this so I have a few questions before I start this process.

If I remember correctly I started TestDisk as:"testdisk" but then with sudo as prompted by TestDisk, I think it shows in the log. Do I need to run "su" first and then run ...
